Description

High-Torque Conversion Kit for Toroidal Launcher

This is an add-on modification for my Toroidal Launcher design that replaces the final stage of the gearbox with a lower ratio gearset designed for high torque. The standard 1:3 ratio gears are replaced with a 1:2 ratio set featuring larger sun gear and twice as many planet gears giving the modified launcher a 1:32 ratio gearbox.

Specifications

  • 1:2 gear ratio
  • 0.75mm gear module for easy replacement; uses existing ring gear and housing

Printing Tips

  • The included print profile adjusts several of the standard settings and is what I've found works the best for speed and quality when printing gears.
    • Arachne wall generator
    • 25% infill, 5 bottom/top walls
    • 75 mm/s inner and outer wall speed
  • For best results calibrate flow rate before printing

Assembly

  • Loosely insert four of the planet gears into the planet carrier.
  • Insert the sun gear followed by the two remaining planet gears. Once all gears are aligned push each planet gear down until it's firmly seated in the carrier. The sun gear should be held in place by the six planet gears.
  • Insert the carrier assembly into the threaded ring so it sits flush.
  • Remove the threaded cap from an assembled launcher by holding the output drive bit and twisting the threaded cap so it loosens.
  • The following parts will be reused from the threaded cap assembly, set them aside.
  • Screw the high torque gear assembly to the launcher housing using the existing hex drive to connect the two stages.
  • Use the original ring gear and cap to secure the complete assembly.
  • Done! As with the original design it can help to add a bit of lubrication to ensure all parts move smoothly.

This feels illegal lol. I saw someone else post a photo of them attaching a drill to their launcher so I decided to remix the back casing to have an attachment point for my locking drillbit. I also tweaked it to have a 1:98 gear ratio while using this high torque conversion kit for more reliability and avoiding gear slip when going at high speeds. If you use the regular back it would have a 1:147 gear ratio. Either way, the only thing that can stop me now is friction. You need a death grip to stop the top from spinning out of your hand.

could you upload the remix for the back casing? I'd love to give this a try!

Sure, but the adapter will only fit a specific sized bit. I will put the dimensions in the description as the bit I used isn’t labeled. I could also add other versions with adapters for different bits.

Nevermind, I checked the licensing and it doesn’t permit sharing remixes.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question, but does this mod make the RPM higher or lower?

Not a dumb question because there really is no answer! The RPM is a function of a lot of parameters such as the moment of inertia (rotational mass) attached to the output, the number of gears, the friction of each stage, ratio of stages, order of stages... I've tried as high as a 1:300 ratio and it makes an absolutely terrifying sound when you spin just the gears but as soon as you attach even the lightest blade it's extremely difficult to get airborne; just too much friction to overcome and the exact same gearbox is very low RPM. I've played around with a lot of different combos but ultimately I want to release everything for the community to play around with, experiment and find their own favorite setup. Thanks for the question!

hey @BrentPeterson , I see this was from almost a year ago! what would you suggest is your recommended print for the one that fly's the furthest? using drill or not, just a really strong crank as well is okay! thank you 👍

I love this design. The designer has made the original launcher in such a modular way that improvements and modifications are possible. I have two of the original launchers, so I applied this conversion kit to one of them and compared them side-by-side. I tried them with the original toroidal propeller, and the version I made that's 20% smaller. To be honest, there didn't seem to be much difference in actual use. The force required, and the distance the propeller flew, were about the same. I will say this conversion kit should withstand a lot more force without breaking, and this is the section of the launcher that gets the most stress. For what it's worth, two sets can be printed together on the print bed of all printers except the A1 Mini, in two different colors if you like.

Thank you for the kind words, glad you like the design! I have a few more things in the works that should give some added oomph if that's what you're after, keep an eye out 😉

The screw keeps getting stuck. What do I do?

goes soooo hard…..

This is one of the coolest designs I've printed. I ended up using a smaller blade/rotor, and it goes quite a bit higher than the one in the original design. Also, I had a lot of friction during assembly, so I sprayed some silicon lube and it helped.

This one can fly higher, it's really great. Thanks...

the high torque version worked much better when I try to crank it hard to get high speed spins, great design and profile

alright but the things holding on to the other part weren’t very strong.
