I have updated the design to improve layer adhesion and tested it. Would like the thanks those that tried and printed GRIP. Happy printing.

I have received several questions regarding the differences between GRIP and Bambu Lab version. While both designs serve the same function, my design approach is based on considerations that I feel are important when designing parts for 3D printing.

  • Reliability and Rigidity - I opted for screw mounting the GRIP bracket because I take into consideration that metal and plastic behave differently with changes in ambient temperature. Clamping the GRIP using screws to the top gantry greatly reduces the chance of any failure due to parts loosening.
  • Ease of Print and Print Orientation - Proper orientation improves print success and user confidence. I design parts with little or no support. A major weakness of 3D-printed parts is the layer lines. With proper orientation of prints, this weakness can be avoided. For example, the AMS lite swivel bracket is printed at 45 degrees to improve the strength of the swivel and eliminate the use of support.
  • Prudent in filament usage - good filament is not cheap. I want to be prudent with filament usage but at that same time NOT sacrificing strength and rigidity. It's a delicate balance and I am happy to say that GRIP has managed to achieve it with a slim profile and a pair of discreet stabilizing feet.

 

 

INTRODUCTION

When I placed the A1 combo on my workstation, I realised the setup required a lot of space on my table. So I decided to design a bracket to mount the AMS lite on the A1 frame. As usual, I set a few parameters and requirements when designing this bracket:

  • Easy and fast to print with little/no support needed.
  • Sturdy and reliable when fully loaded and swivel for easy loading.
  • Use existing mounting holes on the AMS lite for mounting.
  • Secure mounting using screws.
  • A holistic system that will work alongside my A1 PMS (purge management system aka poop bin).

Introducing the AMS lite bracket for the A1. It resembles a gymnast hand grabbing and balancing on a bar. I decided to name it GRIP. It is mounted onto the 40x20 gantry with a clamp-style bracket and secured with M3 screws. This system allows the AMS to swivel improving the load and unload of filaments. 2 retainer clips are used to secure the AMS during printing. A set of PTFE tube guides (dual-colour print) prevents the tubes from overbending and breaking the filament.

 

A set of Stabilization Brackets for the A1 helps reduce the wobbling due to the change in the centre of gravity.

 

BOM

  • Brass inserts M3xOD5mmxL4mm - 9pcs
  • SHCS or BHCS M3x10mm - 9pcs
  • Thin double-sided tape

PRINT INSTRUCTIONS

  1. There are 4 build plates to print. Wall perimeters, top and bottom layers are set to 4. This setting helps to produce strong parts.
  2. I printed my version in BambuLab Basic PLA Jade white and Black. (not affiliated link)
  3. Build plates 01& 02 - print according to orientation, if you prefer to have all the same color. You can combine the parts from both plates together and print.
  4. Build plate 03 - IMPORTANT!! DO NOT CHANGE THE ORIENTATION OF THE PRINT. It was designed to print that way to improve structural rigidity during operation.
  5. Build plate 04 - This is a dual-color print for the PTFE tube guide.

 

BUILD INSTRUCTIONS

  • Turn off the power to A1. Unplug the AMS lite. Practice safety habits.
  • Use a soldering iron to install all 9 brass heat inserts according to the images seen above.
  • Ensure that all inserts are flush to the surface.

 

  • There is a lip inside the swivel bracket that helps secure itself to the AMS lite, a tap will help align the bracket.
  • Install all 4 screws that come with the A1 combo kit. It comes in a pack labelled “For AMS Stand”

 

  • Install the GRIP main body to the gantry. Secure with four M3x10mm screws horizontally.
  • Insert the AMS bracket and lock it with the clamp using four M3x10mm screws.
  • Install the retainer clips on both sides. (Note: Remove clips when swivelling the AMS lite)
  • Optional - screw in the last M3x10mm vertically.

 

  • Install wobble reduction brackets at the back of the printer. The side should flush against the curved surface of the base.
  • There is a left and right side. The left side will have a cutout for the printer switch.
  • Optionally u can use a bit of thin double-sided tape to secure brackets to the printer.

 

  • To check the clearance. Turn on the A1 and do a homing.
  • Raise the X gantry to the top level. There should be a clearance between the tool head and the AMS lite with spool installed.

 

  • Install the PTFE tube guide bracket.
  • Home printer so that tool head reaches the bed. This is the maximum distance required by the PTFE tube.
  • The longer tubes go to 1&2 and the shorter tubes go to 3&4.
  • Ensure there is at least 30cm clearance for the AMS lite holder to rotate. 
  • Turn off your printer, and connect your AMS lite before turning it on again.
  • Do a homing and double-check that the tubes, cables, etc are not in each other way.

You deserved my boost, but it's a shame that you don't make your files remix, because I modified your file making it not to be placed on the A1 but on the wall, less vibrations, less noise.

Any chance of a remix that would extend the arm back slightly further so it would be compatible with the AMS enclosure system? (https://makerworld.com/en/models/486153#profileId-584752) As is it currently hits the system when in the highest Z axis settings.

I actually did a mount inspired by this one and noticed this same issue (I used the same positioning as this one) so this model currently has the same issue but I’m working on an adjustment for this that should be up soon: https://makerworld.com/models/1357400

The overhang was looking pretty rough, so I tried again with tree supports, and it printed much better up until the last cm, but it should still be ok to use for now. (not printed in the pictured orientation)

the overhang angle is 45 degree. so it should not be an overhang issue. Just checking with you, what filament did you use? and was flow dynamic calibration enabled? thanks

Yeah, I wouldn't have expected an overhang issue. I used Bambu PLA Basic Silver, and I can't recall whether I enabled dynamic flow calibration. I probably didn't. I can try again with it enabled tomorrow.

OK, after several attempts, I've (mostly) solved the issue. I'm using Bambu Lab Basic PLA Silver & Bronze. In the new pic, the object on the right was sent from handy app, using standard settings, and was even worse than the silver. The one on the right was a reprint of it, using silent mode with 100% cooling. The issue is that the layers were curling up because they were printing too fast for my conditions. I'd never experienced this before, but it's also happening with non-metallic Basic PLA and Matte PLA, on my A1 & X1C. I also tried a test cube rotated to a similar orientation, and had the same issue. The corner where the support was is still a bit rough, and the counterbores are no longer true circles, but it's almost there.

Yes, i can see them now when you said it. Its in black color so i didnt see them :) I must come up with a solution because i have my A1 up on a concrete paver and it is only 400x400x50mm which doesnt make the feet fit. There is not enough space. So a bit of the foot are in the air :) Maybe i can print a block that are the same height as the printer base or find anything else.. any idea?

It's annoying that the text appears upside down when you use it. It will be more successful if you check it again.

Sorry, I just chose the direction used by bambu lab. I think other users use it like me. Therefore, your point of view only serves to make an otherwise contradictory situation seem correct. I think it would be better if you choose the direction used by bamboo lab.

I see what you mean, the numbers are not in the same direction as those printed on the AMS. In my case, the way I installed the bracket, I needed them in this direction. I am sorry to hear that it did not work in your case, first one to mention it. Not sure if one option could be to turn the AMS around. I can try to have a look at the profile.

Really nice and easy to print. I would like to see an AMS cable clip in the back though (pictured where I think it should go).

After using the official top mount and having an accident because that mount leans slightly forward (one spool fell off mid-print, possible issue with the AMS lite spool holder though). I decided to give this mount a go instead since it sits vertically on top of the printer. It printed perfectly, and it was easy to assemble. At first, I was a little bit worried about the base not being wide enough, but honestly, it is rock solid! Nicely done :)

Quick and easy print. No supports, threaded inserts rather than screwing into plastic, no unnecessary quick-release clip that just might when you don't want it to, stabilizer compatible with Poop bucket. The first thing I printed was a speed Benchy and this thing is solid like a rock! It inspires calm confidence. Well done and thank you. The clips would benefit from some gussets to prevent breakage. One of my clips broke almost immediately. Not a huge deal, but I think it would be a simple fix. Don't worry about top mounting; get a Grip!

The support prints very well and seems really robust. I had the support sliding on the arm, so I added a thin layer of tape and it no longer moved. I find the 2 clicks that maintain the rotation very difficult to grab and remove, I may do a remix to provide a better grip for easier removal. But really, I'm not sure I need the clips, the support doesn't seem to move a millimeter!

On the other hand, I have a question and a doubt about one thing, I find that the PTFE tubes are very tight when the print head is at the bottom, this forms a very pronounced rounding, is this normal? I thought about adding 5 or 10cm to allow a little freedom of movement. I should point out that I did not print the tube supports that attach to the AMS. What do you think, should I use PTFE tubes 5-10cm longer?

Great print. It freed up a ton of space on my bench. Any plans for making dry box enclosures for it like the CUE? I am enjoying the space I reclaimed but realize that I need a dry box for it, just storing filament in a dry box isn't enough in my environment.

I'm going to use a concrete paver 400x400x50mm and a memory foam pad underneath that. I think i have a too small concrete paver to fit the stabilizers for this top mount? How did you solve that? It seems that your concrete paver are much bigger. I really want to try this mount since I cant use the official one with their stabilizer at the rear.
