Description

Watering Attachment Options for the Moss Poles (118mm and 70mm) by MochPoch

Decided to separate the optional accessories of the climbing support system so that the original listing is not cluttered.

Due to frequent inquiries, I've set up a Thangs.com membership for those interested in obtaining a commercial license to sell prints of this model. Please note, this 3D model is NOT for sale, and any use of its media (including but not limited to STLs, print profiles, images, renders, and videos) is prohibited. If you come across it being sold or used commercially without a reference to the membership, kindly report it and let me know.

If you need the model in a specific dimension for your license, feel free to reach out anytime! 😊

The watering attachments are available for 2 versions of the pole:

  1. Original (118mm)
  2. Petit (70mm)

There are currently 2 watering options:

  1. Top-down: drip watering
  2. Bottom-up: wick watering

Option 1

Top-down: Drip watering method

This is my take on the pole watering method of using a funnel and an inverted water bottle. If balancing funnels or dealing with messy watering routines has been a hassle, this attachment offers a stable and slower drip method to keep your plants happy.

Available in 150ml and 300ml sizes, it easily attaches to the top of your moss pole. You can choose from three versions with 1, 2, or 3 holes to adjust the water flow rate to your needs.

Material and Post Processing

It is advised to use filaments that are better in contact with water (like ABS) but I've only tested the models with both PLA and PETG. While not required, applying a sealant inside the reservoir can help prolong the life of the attachment.

Assembly

Simply attach the reservoir to the top of the pole, ensuring the hole(s) touches the pole medium to break surface tension.

Some Notes

  • The drip holes must come in contact with the pole medium.
    • One may notice that the water doesn't necessarily drip out of the hole once this topper is filled. This is intended. The pole medium (moss, for example) must come in contact with the drip hole to break the surface tension.
  • From my experience, 150ml is enough to soak the 200mm backing.
(I personally prefer the single or double holed ones)
    However, it still depends on:
    • the watering frequency and volume
    • the medium type.
  • Make sure to check the medium (crunch test) and avoid overwatering.
  • Do not let the medium dry out completely as it will make watering difficult. (The water passes faster than the medium could absorb it).

Option 2

Bottom-up: Wick watering method

This was requested by a lovely user of the main moss pole design. Their setup used LECA balls as the medium and needed a cap with a wick holder.

It comes in 10mm and 12mm wick diameter options. Just tie one end of the wick to the cap and place the other end in a water reservoir. Suitable for hydro, semi-hydro setups, or traditional potting mediums.

Print Configuration, Material and Post Processing

Print with the top side down where the wick holder is facing up. Use PLA or PETG with 3 wall loops for a solid build. While not required, adding a sealant on the hoop can prolong the life of the attachment.

I’m not quite using these as intended, but I still think they’re great. I’ve modified to fit the cheap-o plastic store-bought moss poles I already had. Because my pole(s) as seen here aren’t quite full of moss, I just let them slowly drip into the moss and it seems to do the trick. I’m currently printing one of these reservoirs in clear PETG to go better with the moss poles and will definitely be making more, along with your actual moss poles. Thank you!

I just printed it and it printed well. however, it doesn’t drain or drip. I have the bottom touching the moss in the pole, but after leaving it for over an hour, the water level didn’t go down. :-(

Hi there, this maybe a filament/printer issue. From my experience, when the nozzle is worn out, the extrusion is no longer the same. Could also be a filament issue, for example when it’s too wet and it bubbles up making the opening too small. If these doesn’t help, send me a message and let’s sort out a model with maybe some bigger drip holes. That said, wishing you a happy growing! ☺️

I have printed many of these for the matching moss poles. I usually use the double hole version for spaghum moss. I like the 300ml version for my taller plants with 40-60cm tall poles. I have also scaled a few to fit my clear D shaped moss poles. They work great for those too. The supports on all sizes are easy to remove and create minimal waste.
