Description

Wraps the edges of an Elegoo Rapid 1kg cardboard spool with 198mm diameter

Features

  • Improves contact and rotation in the AMS
  • Protective layer to prevent cardboard from deteriorating and cardboard dust damaging the AMS
  • Integrated filament clip (optional)
  • Name clearly visible to identify what spool it is for
  • Sturdy design - I found that many other designs were too thin and broke easily when removed.
  • Avoids blocking filament holes in the cardboard spool

Instructions

  • Measure your spool first to ensure the diameter matches the adapter (198mm)
  • The ‘right' ring has the filament clip must be on the right side when the spool is in the AMS.
  • If you don't need the filament clip, print two ‘left’ rings.
  • See photos

Notes

  • Print Material: I recommend PETG or PHA as they are more flexible and less prone to breakage.

First, I just wanted to say that I like your design. This is the first adapter I've seen that has an inside ring in place of half a dozen tiny tabs. But I was wondering--how old is your Elegoo Rapid filament? I just ordered a spool from Amazon a week ago, and this adapter is way too small for it. I bumped the PLA version up from 200.09 to 201.4, and it seems to fit pretty well. 201.3 might be even better. I wonder why the big size difference. You think Elegoo changed their spool sizes? Thanks, Anselor.

I just bought mine from Amazon earlier this month. It is possible they're in a transition period. It's also possible your spool just has slightly more moisture absorbed and is a bit bigger as a result. If you'd be willing to test for me I'd be happy to make an updated larger version. Does your spool label look similar to mine?

Yeah, it looks the same. It doesn't look quite as pink as your pic, but I'm guessing that side-by-side in real life, they'd be the same tan shade. And I had the adapters ready when I opened it from the vacuum-sealed bag, so moisture shouldn't have been an issue. It was sealed tightly with no leaks. I have a couple of year-old Elegoo Rapid spools that I'll try the adaptors on later today to see if there's a difference in size there, which would support the transition period theory. I printed the adapters with Duramic Cyan PLA, and yeah, I can't find the cause for the difference in size. Thank you for working though this with me though, Anselor. Also, do you ever have problems with the smooth-edged spool adapters in your AMS? They never work in mine. I have to corrugate the edges on every adaptor just to get them to work. Thanks again.

I've not had problem with smooth wall adapters in my AMS. I can add a reeded pattern to the edge (like the edge of a coin) if this is a common issue people have. It occurs to me that it's possible I don't have issues because I usually add a desiccant canister in the center of my spools which adds some weight.

Once you get a chance to use them, I would love your thoughts on the ribbed vs smooth versions.
