Description

Hello friends,here is a cardboard spool adapter for AMS.
This adapter is "almost" universal.In fact, thanks to its shape and the elasticity of the plastic (preferably PETG) this tool adapts to most cardboard spool formats.This feature is also useful in the case of smaller formats: the springs also work as shock absorbers during the rotation of the spool.

Edit: A model for thicker cardboards has been added. Find it on STL Download.
Edit Fri 21 Jun 2024: Other 2 spools adapters with a thinner external circumference walls (0.40 only) added available in the STL downloads.

NOTE: some cardboard models are slightly different from the standard measurements declared by the manufacturer. Please note that AMS accepts coils up to 202mm in diameter and so even a slight oversize from the factory could render the coil unusable with any adapter.

Great print! I need to print the updated version with wider lip because the cardboard on Elegoo is thicker than this one, but it stayed in place very nicely in the AMS. I'm blaming the cardboard, not the print for that.

only issue i have is the section that goes over the rim of the cardboard could be a tad deeper. other than than that. Great job.

Hi thank you very much. As specified in th edit I posted some days ago, I added a file for thicker cardboards. You should find it in the "Download-STL" section and it is modeled for §mm thick spools. I don't think there are spools thicker than 6mm but, if there are, please let me know it: Happy printing pal !! ;)

Love this design. Doesn't fit PolyTerra or Elegoo completely for me so I'm gonna have to make some changes to enlarge things a bit.

Thank you very much for the like and the boost!! Could you specify if it doesn't fit the internal circumference or the external so I could work on it ? Just be careful if the external ring has to be oversized, because it could touch the lid of the AMS. I also had another famous brand with the same cardboards but one was 1mm larger than the other one (unluckily it can happen 🙄) so I forced a little to fit the external rings on it, but the spool was touching the lid (AMS only accept 190-202mm spools). A working solution was to sand the spool a little covering the filament with plastic food transparent paper and than paying attention to clean the spool before remove the protection. Give me a feedback once done 😉🙏🏻🙏🏻 Thanks again !! 😉

I tried on Elegoo Rapid PETG white and it somewhat fits. The outside and inside diameter fits, BUT the cardboard thickness is about 6mm, so it feels a little more wiggle on latching inside the spool would be useful. Otherwise, a very practical design that's functional and doesn't take up much filament to print ! :)

nice design! but it’s jam in AMS with Esun cardboard spool (200 mm), so I need little top up AMS lid.

That's curious . I have Esun cardboards and i created my mdel using that brand as You can see from the pictures i posted and i don't have your problem. The spool fits well in the AMS and i can keep the lid completely closed. I'll check again for some differences in the multitude of esun cardboard I have. I am thankful for your commeent , I appreciate when i can work back on my model to make it even better ! I'll be beack to this comment as soon as I will have checked ;)

Hi again ! I just checked the model and my prints. The model has an external circumference thickness of 0.60mm,. that means your spool should be overdimensioned to 201,20mm, almost 1mm less than the AMS supported maximum diameter (197-202 mm). Please check your flow to eventually look some overextrusion (that would make the circumference larger than it should) or the cardboard exact diameter (that's i assure you it's more difficult to achieve ... sigh... ). I will post in the STL downloads a model with circumference walls set at 0.4mm instead of 0.6, so the total diameter of your esun spool with the adapter would be 200.80 (but surely it will be more fragile). Thank you.

Very nice, except the Universal spool thicker is missing a chamfer on 1 of the 7 nubs.
