Meet "Bonfly" - the fruit fly catching Bonsai. The Bonsai Contest made me think of a model that is not just another plastic tree. I wanted the model to be functional and aesthetic at the same time. So I came up with "Bonfly" a bonsai inspired model that uses the same well known and tested "paper funnel in a jar with some vinegar and sugar" - concept to catch those nasty flies. Basically you put some lure (like vinegar and sugar) in the bottom - put the funnels in and add the bonsai on top - done. The flies will smell the lure and climb into the base and dont find a way back out. About half a year ago I created a plant model that uses the same concept and I can proudly say that this concept is proven. I caught so my flies with it while having a pretty looking planter in my kitchen. One time my wife almost watered it because she thought its a real plant 😅 check my profile if you are looking for a smaller version. Where do I get ideas for my modelos from? 🤨🤔❔❓ Well, I'm not always creative, sometimes I struggle too. And when that happens, but I still want to create something, I check the MakerWorld contests. They're a great source of inspiration to see the extremely creative models from this community and to see which contests are currently running. That's where the idea for my new model, the Kanso bonsai, came from. The idea here was to make something simple to print but satisfying to assemble, that could be used as decoration. #Bonsai The Story Behind “The Story of Bonsai” This project didn’t start as a bonsai. At the beginning, it was just a simple stage idea. I wanted to create something with light, something calm, something minimal. But getting that light right turned out to be much harder than expected. Early versions had hotspots, uneven glow, and didn’t feel natural at all. It took multiple iterations to finally reach a soft, balanced diffusion across the wooden panels. At that point, the stage felt complete but also empty. That’s when the bonsai came in. And that brought a completely new challenge. I tried PLA first, but it didn’t behave the way I needed. The branches felt too stiff, the leaves didn’t flow, and it never looked like a willow. Switching to TPU changed everything. It allowed the foliage to hang, bend, and move in a way that finally felt natural. But it also made the process slower and more demanding. In the end, the tree became something you don’t really assemble you shape it. Each version turns out a little different, depending on how much you add, remove, or adjust. The base also evolved beyond just lighting. I added 16 engraved tiles that tell the story of bonsai through time, turning the whole piece into something more than a display. It became a combination of light, material, and narrative. Somewhere along the way, this project became more personal than I expected. 3D printing started as a hobby, but it slowly turned into something that helped me deal with things I couldn’t really control otherwise. On difficult days, being able to focus on making something, even something small made things a bit more manageable. Not in a dramatic way. Just… enough. This project is a part of that process. There’s still a lot that could be improved, especially around materials and filament options, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. Curious to hear what you think 🌿#Contests(Edited)
