Description

Self-watering device for houseplants

 

This device is designed to allow you to water your houseplants. Unlike just watering on the surface, this has two key benefits:

  • Water is delivered down into the root-ball, where it is needed, rather than laying on the surface of the soil.
  • Water is delivered slowly, rather than as a deluge that gets wasted as instant run-off. Just how slowly depends on your soil - if its dry or free-draining, it may just go straight in, but if it's moist and solid, the hydrostatic back-pressure will make it take longer.

NEW - If you're looking for something to deliver water over days or weeks, you need something which isn't open at the top, so atmospheric pressure can also hold the water back. Try this:

This particular design has some extra features:

 

To reduce loss caused by evaporation, the container at the top is mostly enclosed with a funnel lid: you pour water in, and most of it will be protected below the funnel surface and won't evaporate off before it is needed:

 

 

At the bottom, there are additional lateral holes. These ensure that when you push the device into the soil device doesn't get clogged up, which can be a problem with traditional designs that only have a single hole at the bottom.

 

A couple of bonus features:

 

The base of the funnel lid has a trap to prevent dirt getting into the main storage area.

The small hole near the top of the funnel is to let air escape from under the funnel lid as you fill it with water.

 

Printing notes

 

This prints without supports.

 

This prints well in PLA. You can scale it up if you want, but I wouldn't recommend printing it any smaller.

 

The dirt-trap at the base of the funnel may string a little bit as it prints, but this doesn't affect the print - and is actually helpful in keeping the dirt out!

 

The 3MF file settings include some brim. This is recommended to avoid the model getting knocked off the plate during printing, but may be a little fiddly to remove. (You can just leave the brim on the model - it looks good either way!)

This is absolute rubbish. It does not work! The water just comes out of the holes in 2 seconds! This does absolutely nothing except waste filament.

Sorry to hear it's not working for you. I'm not sure how you are using it, but you need to push it firmly in place in the soil first, before filling it with water. (You can't fill it first before placing it in the pot or it will indeed rapidly empty)

Ok, it will depend on a lot of factors, for example how developed the root ball is, what the soil structure is like and how dry it currently is. It may be your plant is too dry and just needs a lot of conventional watering first, that this device can then keep topped up.

i was understanding that this model stays implanted on the plant and water is poured into the model and the water should stay(?) and incrementally waters the plant? or am i understanding it wrong? the moment i pour water on the model, the waters instantaneously goes into the plant (roots). thank you for sharing this model.

The flow rate of the water leaving the device is controlled by the hydrostatic back-pressure from the soil. Which basically means that if the soil is dry or free-draining, the water will flow faster than if it is more solid and already wet. There is another type of device that isn't open to the atmosphere at the top (so is harder to fill up), but that releases water much slower as there is then also atmospheric pressure holding the water in too. I'll look at designing one of those soon.

no offense, but this is just a fancy funnel. if the top has holes in it, it will just act as a funnel, and there will be no micro dosing. you need it to be a full enclosed bulb on the top.

I'm looking at making a design that does that soon, so if you ‘follow’ me you might get a notification when that's released)"
