Description

This clock uses a backlight and patterns to create a moiré effect that will change over the course of each hour. The effect is slow moving but noticible - especially so on the grid faces.

 

Note that you only need one set of hour and minute hands. Multiple designs are included so that you can choose which to use - see animations of their effects below:

 

Large Grid: this is a classic Moiré pattern, allows significant light pass-through and is easier to print.
Small Grid: this version has smaller holes so they may get slightly blocked if your printing isn't as precise. However, the larger number of holes means that the patterns may be more pronounced.
Rays: this simpler pattern doesn't have as strong of an effect but does let through the most light.
Curves: the goal with this pattern was to add some moiré motion (compared to the Rays option) while still letting through the most light.

Assembly Instructions

Attach the switch to the base with using (2) M2x6 screws - orient the port so that it's facing out with room to attach a wire.
  1. Feed the USB power cable through the rectangular space in the back of the back shell. This will be a tight fit and may require rotating the cable to find space.
  2. Attach the PH2.0 connector from the power cable to the Y connector
  3. Attach the black wires of the Y connector to the switch
  4. Attach the red/black wire to the COB LED.
  5. Feed the LED through the hole in the base.
Start at the end of the LED and press the strip into the channel - be sure that the front of the LEDs are facing out.

Place the button cover into the slot in the back shell & attach the back shell to the base using (4) M2x6 screws. You may need to be cautious that none of the wires are pinched in the process. It can be helpful to lightly tape them in place so that they are not damaged when attaching the shell.

 

Insert the back of the clock kit through the base and attach whith the brass nut.

Insert the stand into the back and attach with an M2x6 screw.

 

Press the front shell onto the front of the base. It may help to use a rotate the shelll back and forth as this is a tight fit. Ensure that the hour markers are aligned so that they are oriented correctly. 

Attach your chosen hour hand first and the the minute hand - these should be a tight fit. You will need to glue on the small triangular markers to the hour and minute hands.

 

Printing Tips

  • Be sure to use a light-colored, opaque filament for the front shell so that enough light can be transmitted. Transparent filaments are not recommended.
  • The settings in the print profile are recommended to allow maximum light through the front shell.
  • Use a smooth PEI plate so that the front surfaces (through which light passes) will not be marred. Be cautious when removing the fron shell - since it's thin it can easily break or discolor.
