Description

Lightweight glider for Indoor and Outdoor Fun

 

Hand-, Crossbow-, or Rubber band start possible

Easy and fast print

 

Print Settings:

Layer height:

0.12mm works best, 0.06mm are also ok

Infill: 100%

Outer Lines: Min 2

Placement: Glider is rotated 45° in z-axis so that the infill of the first layer goes along the wings. This gives some rigidity when bending the wings and stabilizers.

Also a practical tool to calibrate your first layer and test layer adhesion.

 

Preparations:

Stick the vertical stabilizer into the slot in the fuselage or bend the horizontal stabilizers to a v-tail configuration.

Bend wings slightly upwards

Bend tail slightly upwards directly behind the wings.

 

Launch:

 

Hand launch

Grip between wings and tail or with your index finger on the rubber band notch and throw gently

 

Gummi band launch

Hold the band as you like

Place sling on edge on the bottom

Shoot

 

Catapult start

Place plane with edge directly on the sling

Shoot

brilliant, I scaled it to 95% and launched it from the 15th floor. this thing was so fast. ps don't print it in black or you'll lose sight of it pretty quick lol

I work in an aerospace job and I've printed and given away at least 20 of these! Really popular with my coworkers. It flies very well if not thrown too hard. I found that out early. A little dihedral in the wings helps with stability. I have noticed that if it sits upright too long that the wings will warp a bit. Not a big deal but I've found that leaving it sit upside down with the tail hanging of the desk keeps things straight. I've had a little trouble getting the vertical tail in the slot but it seems to just be print variability. Sometimes it goes right in, other times I've trimmed the very corner of the tab off just a little. Overall I'm really happy with the model, the prints and the performance. Very fun little toy. I'm sure that I'll be making more of these for people. Thanks for this great model!

Printed well except for the tail warping and peeling off a little during print, but doesn't seem to affect functionality. Likely an issue with my printer instead of the model.

Do you have an idea how to improve the bed adhesion on this part without extra work afterwards? Besides keeping your bed clean, the only advice I would have for this would be to use a textured PEI sheet. Just works WAY more reliably for me, especially for this kind of feature.

There is no slingshot included. You can start it by hand. Do you always give bad ratings, because you don't have a rubber band?

Where's the vertical stabiliser? Ok an update on this...... I've made 2 now and they glide beautifully on indoor testing, I am totally blown away! I've been a fan of model aircraft for years and to be able to print this is just amazing. Thank you and great update on single plate printing with the vertical stabiliser. I've had a thought that this would be great with a capacitor power unit in with the pod for the motor on top in-between the wings, the capacitor in the nose/fuselage along with a charge port? If I get chance I may make a prototype to see if it would work? I think if it caught a thermal it would be gone! But again to any model flying fans, this is well worth printing a few for fun indoors or outdoors on a flat calm day.

Thank you for your comment. I added a new print profile with vertical stabilizer, but it also should work without it in a v-tail configuration.
