Description

Because curiosity got the better of me, I designed up this 7" vinyl to 3D print and know what it would sound like.

spoilers It sounds like the 3D printer as it was making the vinyl.

Printed in solid PLA as any infill causes bubbling and bumps that throw the record needle of the groove

Update: there is now a profile for the A1 Mini in a true 7" size (and longer ‘track’ duration because I could).

Alternatively, if the single colour flat black doesn't do it for you, User @Doom_Taco remixed the larger model to have a neat centre art, check it out - https://makerworld.com/en/models/2304994-vinyl-decoration-music-makes-the-world-go-round

it really works. wish i could upload audio here. you can really hear the sound which the printer is making. i hope there will be more printable tunes soon haha! - played on an old samsung player which i revived from the dead the other day.

Thank you for giving this a go and discovering this little bit of 3D printing magic for yourself. In terms of making versions of this that don't sound like a printer printing... I don't have any ambitions of doing this myself, but have been made aware of others who do! My fear is that for a FDM 3D printer, you'd have to some how either make the background noise of the printing process quieter (what you hear by playing this) or make the audio trying to be played much louder, which boarders on damaging the record player's needle. Perhaps a larger enough resin (SLA/DLP) 3D printer with a much smaller layer height could improve the signal to noise to an acceptable level and would be able to get the sound fidelity such that music isn't limited to 8-bit! Thank you again for giving this a print, and for the review

Very well-designed model. Printed cleanly with excellent layer consistency and no issues during the process. The proportions and details are spot on, making it a pleasure to print. Great work Great Birthday gift idea

Thank you for printing this and the great review - I love the colour and the addition of the text really make it something special! Happy birthday to the recipient

Hello, did you print it at the original size or did you scale it up? If you increased the size, what is the current diameter in centimeters, and did you encounter any problems during printing?

This is the scale I used, print fine I have some difficulties with the text but printing was okay. I print using the 0.4 Nozzle

gotta wonder - could we feasibly print a blank 7” and then use a Gakken record maker to cut into it? I’ve made some on premade cuts but I’m unsure what they even make the records out of!

Thank you for the comment, I'd never heard of the Gakken record maker before so can't comment on the feasibility of 3D printed blanks with this "toy". That said, I would think that the original blanks would need to be somewhat soft to make the cutting/impression needle feasible for such a small scale, but also strong enough to survive a standard record player. To that thinking, PLA could be a good option, particularly if you pre-heated the blank either on a hot bed, or with a gas match to soften it before embossing with the sound as it would harden up when it cooled. I do like this idea alot. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for giving it a print; it looks like you've got a blob on the outer right of the track (in your second photo) - maybe start the stylist just in from that to prevent it from jumping out

ik this may be difficult, but you should make it customisable

thank you for the suggestion, what would you like to see customisable?

the record. by customisable I meant choices between different songs? also it would be really nice to have a smaller record for the A1 Mini, as this record is not available for me to print because there is no A1 mini option. Thanks!

thanks for the suggestion, I will see if I can scale it down for the A1 mini, but don't have the ability to put songs on it. I believe others have been able to encode songs into printable files, but need finer printers to achieve it

Should this be used with a glass stylus, I don’t want to ruin my current one

Whilst PLA is soft (relatively speaking), I wouldn't recommend playing this print with a high end stylist
