Description

Othello: Bookcase Edition – A Shelf‑Friendly Take on the Classic Strategy Game

This is my “bookcase edition” reinterpretation of Othello (also known as Reversi): a compact, stylish version of the classic strategy game that stores away looking just like a book on your shelf. It’s designed to be easy to print, satisfying to assemble, and fun to play.

What makes it special?

Instead of a loose board and pieces, everything packs neatly into a book‑shaped case. Open the cover to reveal a clean, gridded playing surface and snug storage—and when you’re done, close it up and slide it onto your bookshelf like a book.
For extra security, I have made positions for standard 8×2 mm magnets to keep it closed.

Rules

This is a game I used to play at my grandparents so I was keen to make a version to play with my kids! The rules of Othello/Reversi are simple, take turns playing pieces, flanking your opponent’s discs to flip them to your colour and aim to control the board by the final move. You can only play if you can make a piece flip.

Compact and elegant design

  • Book‑style shell fits beautifully on a shelf
  • Magnet‑latched cover (standard 8×2 mm magnets)
  • Two‑part disc tray for all 64 pieces, with magnets to keep the tray shut
  • Clean, minimal aesthetic that feels like a premium edition
  • Designed to print reliably on small printers (A1 Mini compatible)

Assembly instructions

  1. Attach the spine: Use superglue (CA) or similar to bond the spine to the flat edge of the book (the side without page indentations).
  2. Glue the ribs: Insert and glue the ribs into the slots on the spine.
  3. Install the magnets (book latch):
    • Use standard 8×2 mm disc magnets. Easily available on Ebay/Amazon.
    • Check polarity before gluing. Alternate polarity for each position so that it stacks with the 2 tray pieces between the case and the playing board. Tip: Mark one pole of each magnet with a permanent marker before installation to avoid polarity mistakes.
    • A tiny drop of CA or 5‑minute epoxy works well. Wipe any squeeze‑out before it cures.

        4. Load the tray with all 64 discs; it nests neatly inside the book.

Printing details

  • Designed with makers (and AMS‑less printers) in mind: add a pause at the right layer to switch filament for each plate, as shown in the plate heading.
  • Dimensions: 180 mm × 180 mm—ideal for a Bambu Lab A1‑Mini (or scale everything up for larger printers).
  • Prints cleanly with standard PLA.
