Description

Mantis Lord mask from the video game Hollow Knight. I took my learnings from previous masks and tried to incorporate that into this design (easy to print, painted on supports, labels for mirrored parts, reduced filament required, etc.).

This mask should be done in 3 colors, but doesn't require an AMS (you can also paint the pieces which I generally think is underrated). I used this cool Galaxy Black PLA for the majority of the mask because it captures the black with blue highlights like in the game. For the face mask I use a simple PLA white, and for the eyes it is a PLA black. PETG should also be good, but I usually don't like how shiny it looks when it is done.

I created this model specifically because one of you recommended it. I am always happy to do that when you are kind and supportive... or even just kinda supportive.

Assembly instructions

  1. Half of the dark blue pieces are marked with an R for the right side of the head, the other half have no markings.
  2. You will want to connect the horn pieces together first with a bit of, they fit together very tightly, so you may not have a chance to separate them again once you put them together. So get the glue in there first.
  3. Next assemble the two sides of the head piece, put a beat of super glue down the seem in the center and you will probably want some clamps to hold the pieces together while it dries.
  4. Next put the eyes into the white faceplate. These come in from the back of the face plate and you will need a little glue to hold them in place.
  5. Connect the face plate to the head pieces, use some glue and clamps to make sure it all dries together nicely.
  6. Finally, connect the horn pieces to the head piece using the glue and the cube like shapes you printed. Match the R pieces up on the right side of the head piece.

Sizing

Will this mask fit my head? Good question, but hard to answer. The mask in the main profile is my original design, and fits my adult sized head well (a 23" ball cap circumference and 27" from crown to jaw circumference). If I wear a thick winter hat and increase both of those numbers by 1.5" to 24.5" and 28.5" it no longer fits.. Unless you are known for your large head, it will probably fit.

But what about a model sized for my teenager or child? Well if my head is 23" and I am sizing it for a 21" head, I would change the scaling on each part of the print by 21/23 = 91.3%. If you are scaling it down substantially, it will probably have issues as some pieces may be too thin to print properly. I really can't guarantee that it will fit anyone's head, but I hope that all helps.

One could argue that I have gotten carried away with Hollow Knight and Silksong related designs… I am sharing the list and links here so you can find them easily, I hope you enjoy them!

This model is fantastic! There was a little problem with attaching the bottom and top of the left horn because the stub was to tall for the thing that it goes into. It was an easy fix though and it came out great. I now have to crouch when going through doorframes. Also, I was wondering if you could make more helmet like this. It would be cool to have other helmet like the watcher knights or zote.

Wow! That looks amazing! I tried wearing this mask when giving kids candy who were trick or treating at my house. I had to take it off because I kept crashing into the doorframes. Glad you were able to get it working for you!

I think for the needle that they have I’m going to use your hornet’s needle mod but without the ring at the bottom. Your work it great! 👍

Hello, im printing some of your masks for an upcoming comic con, and i just printed one of the parts of this design that goes over your head (OBJ 6), and for me it doesnt fit, I think it should be as big as the hornet which fits me even though its a bit downscaled (98.8%). So doe you think its because i live in europe and it didnt conver right? Or should I also print object OBJ 1 and that makes it a bit bigger? dont wanna waste too much filament. Btw, I love your designs, already fully printed the hornet and pure vessel.

Sorry to hear this. This mask and the one for the Pure Vessel fit tighter on my head than the adult sized hornet one. I spent some time looking at it in Bambu Studio and there are some ways to get a bit more size out of it. I selected all the parts in the profile and resized them uniform scale to a z height of 250mm which gets you about 3.4% more in size. If you want more from it, the next step would be to shorten (not uniform scale) the horn pieces on plates 2 and 3 to a z height of 225 and then scale all the pieces with a uniform scale up to 250 (think that gets you about 10% more size and I think everything should still fit together without an issue (I haven't tried this myself). If you have already printed the horns, and you just want to resize the other parts I would scale them uniformly up to a height of 250. Does that help?

Hello, bit late reply but I was on vacation. The 3.4% increase is definitely not enough, I also think that if I'd use the other method you advised it'll give it a bit off look. I'm probably gonna try to scale it all up and then cut the pieces in half that need to, with the big horns it wont be a problem as i can just easily put a connector between the pieces, but the headpieces will be a bit harder. Im gonna try my best to make something off of it, maybe you can try too as you have the original file. I'll keep you updated.

I am sure I am too late, but just in case, I did add a new profile that should be plenty big. It fits loosely on my head.

Will be printing this if I can get my printer to work again add: I squeaked like quite literally when I saw this because the mantis lords are my favorite (in hollow Knight)

Good question! I think the mantis Lord mask is better designed, but I also have the armor for the pure Vessel.

i would cut this to fit on a1 mini, i definitely could, but i don't feel like it. Update: it's mostly done. just trying to figure out how to get the main bit to fit without cutting it in such a way as to make it a huge pain to put together. the face part fits perfectly with a little bit of rotating. update: i got an a1 now, but the dark blue metallic filament i was gonna use got tangled and taken off the spool so i can't print it right now.
