Description

Boost Me (for free)

One and only free and 3D printable commodore 64 case on the internet!!!
boost for future projects.

This case is consisting of 4 pieces, so it is compatible with 3D printing. bottom half is very similar to original case. even vents and supports are in original place. top part is a little different. biggest change to top part is it uses M3 size threaded insert on mounts that connect it to bottom. Top part is missing the middle screw mount to keep it compatible with 3d printing. but the threaded inserts are holding perfectly fine.

Because of the long and thin nature of parts I suggest you to print it in silent mode.

Changes to Original Design:

  • Added cutouts for ports
  • added vents
  • added keyboard brackets
  • added standoffs for board
  • added place for feets

V1.1

I tought I solved every problem on V1.0, but I wasn't , so V1.1 is here.

V2.0

added compatibility with shortboards.

made changes in the sizes of the vents, now its less like the original but more compatible with 3d printing.

V2.1

fixed issue of cartdtidge port clearance

fixed some geometry issues

added alignment brackets to bottom half

shorthened keyboard brackets by 2mm

added more clearance to rf modulator ports for modern replacements.

Great model, everything fits, but my PLA didn't print very well and the connection isn't quite straight enough. But I'm still very happy with it.

your model looks quite nice in yellow. It looks like your top part is shifted to forward, however neither of the models that I printed had that problem. are you sure you dont have anything in the C64 that prevents case from fully sliding backwards, because 2 weeks ago I printed another case from the bambu handy app to check if everything is fine, and in fact I didn't have the problem of top case shifting forward.

The model is definitely fine, it's more likely a problem with my filament. Unfortunately, the only filament I had in the color I wanted (yellow) was SUNLU PLA+. Maybe someday I'll try a better one that won't deform.

At a second glance I can see the back left and back right is aligned quite good, but the middle looks like stretched, can you check if there is anything in the groove that the middle mount goes.

Can you check the small rectangular places in the bottom left, that hinges hold on, exists? because in one of my models I relized they were missing so you werent able to close the lid.

Really great design. printed one in PLA and it came out great. had no silent mode an A1, but that’s okay. glued the upper und lower halfs. For me, the seem ist quite visible. perhaps should have taken another filament, but liked the color. perhaps I print another one, apply some filler und try to spray paint it.

Thats why. In the description, at the end of the first paragraph I said "Because of the long and thin nature of parts I suggest you to print it in silent mode"

It appears to be missing the vents in the top that are in the orginal case.

I know they don't exist but if I had put them due to their long and thin structure they would cause fails or even if they succeed they would look bad. thats one of the reason the vertical vents in the bottom of the case is thicker and shorter that originals cause they would cause printing artifacts.

OK, not having the top vents would concern me. Convection would mean that the heat generated in the C64 would draw air into the bottom vents and it would rise through the top. I assume Commodore added the top vents for this reason. Maybe shorter vents along a longer section of the top strips would be practical, or some other way for the hot air to escape?

Vents on the commodore 64 case was a legacy feature from the VIC-20 days where the original VIC had a internal voltage regulator. In the first 3 years of commodore 64 production they were using the same top case for the both 64 and VIC, If you look closer to some later VIC-20s you will notice on the Cartridge port there was a small cutout normally there to get clearance to the commodore 64s rf modulator output, it was there but not used. After they discontinued the VIC-20 they redesigned the case, decreased the height by 3 mm and removed the vents on the top. Personal I have 2 commodore 64, one from 1984 and one from 1986, both breadbins. 1984 model has wents but the 1986 model doesn't.
