Introduction

Facing desk clutter and a lack of space, I sought a solution beyond traditional boxes. Constantly shuffling items between surfaces became tiresome, prompting me to design a drawer that blends seamlessly with my workspace.

Seeking simplicity and functionality, I aimed for a design that integrates smoothly with my surroundings. As a programmer, gamer, and hobbyist, I spend countless hours at my desk, so creating an environment that fosters productivity and minimizes stress was paramount.

Drawing on community feedback, I refined the model to meet practical needs, resulting in features like stackability, pull-out protection, on-desk usage, and optional handles. Although delicate, these enhancements elevate usability and aesthetics.

Description

The choice is yours: utilize it as a desk drawer or mount it beneath your desk for additional surface area. Engineered for seamless operation, the drawers feature rounded corners and rails to minimize surface drag resistance, ensuring smooth functionality. Built-in pull-out protection prevents accidental drawer removal, safeguarding your belongings from falling. If needed, the drawers can still be easily removed. With ample surface area, tape can be used for mounting; alternatively, angled boreholes allow for secure screwing underneath your desk for added stability. Two case options are available: one offers a sleek appearance even from the sides, while the other facilitates stacking and connecting multiple units using connectors for enhanced rigidity. Finally, a base and top cover complete the look, transforming it into an on-desk drawer and concealing any holes as desired.

Printing

Printing this model is simple; there are no special requirements. Minimal support is provided for the large holes underneath the case, which can be disabled if desired, though it enhances their appearance and makes them easy to remove. Additionally, there is minimal support for the pull-out clamps on the drawer, which are essential; removing them would result in printing in mid-air.

Installation

Under Desk Drawer

Secure this under-desk drawer to your table's underside using Countersunk screws (refer to recommendations). Ensure the screws sit flush for optimal stability. For a smooth installation, consider predrilling holes before mounting. Enjoy a sturdy and functional addition to your workspace! Alternatively, use tape for a hassle-free attachment— the ample surface area makes it suitable.

Add the connectors into the holes on the holder. They are press-fit, so you need to apply some force. After you insert them on one side hold them together and repeat the stop on the opposite side.

You can then simply put them onto the base, and add the top.

Please note: The base and top only COVER the holes, there is no direct connection. The covers are very small and brittle. Once added nothing will happen to them. If you want a forced connection I recommend gluing them onto the Holders.

Optional Handle:

Apply firm and even pressure to the handle, pressing it into the grip area. The layer lines on the handle create a tight and secure fit. Use controlled force to avoid any damage to the handle or the drawer. If you desire additional stability, you can optionally apply some glue around the base of the handle. Ensure the glue is evenly distributed for a secure bond. If you haven't used glue and need to remove or replace the handle, gently wiggle it out of the grip area.

Screw Recommendations:

With the lowered back, there's increased flexibility for screws that aren't perfectly flat. The cutout is designed for 8mm diameter screws, accommodating 4x something mm screws snugly. While 3.5x and 3mm will work, the latter leans towards the flimsy side.

Tape Recommendations:

When taping it to the underside of your desk, invest in quality tape designed for this purpose. I recommend 3M VHB 4611; a small amount goes a long way. Choose your placement wisely because once it adheres, it stays securely in place.

28.01.2024 - Release v3

I want to express my gratitude to everyone who provided feedback on the model. Consolidating all the input, it took some time, but as I continue to learn CAD and Fusion 360, and with around four months of 3D printing experience, I'm pleased to share an improved model. Despite the increased print time and filament usage, the updated version is now significantly sturdier and more reliable, enhancing the overall feel when using the drawer. 😊

I'm actively updating the description to reflect these changes. However, I wanted to release the model files promptly to address the layer adhesion problem that some users encountered. Your support is greatly appreciated!

Height Adjustment
You may observe a 2mm height increase – no worries, existing drawers remain compatible. The added height accommodates the new holder design, providing a snug fit around the drawer.
Holder Upgrade
The holder is now enclosed, resolving previous layer adhesion issues. Print vertically for enhanced stability and rigidity. Bonus: Easily install with double-sided tape.
Holder Variants
Responding to user requests, two holder variants are available. Choose between a sleek variant for mounting below the desk or a stackable version with connectors.
Pull-Out Protection
Introducing a "pull-out" protection feature. While you can still pull it out, you'll experience minimal resistance. The strategically placed stopper ensures enough drawer remains in the holder.
Additional Features
Added a Top Cover for desk drawer use.
Included a Base for elevating the drawer.

Added an optional Handle

21.01.2024 - Release v2

Based on Feedback the models were slightly adjusted. These improvements are compatible with previous printed parts. That means you can replace the mount or the drawer and keep the other one.

I get that it´s tough to have the right screws at hand. The back of the drawer was lowered by 3mm to allow screws not to sit 100% flat flush and have a bit more room.
The back of the mount is now reinforced. It is now a little bit taller than before and has cross struts on both sides to make the mount more rigid.
I increased the walls to 3 and the bottom layers to 5, this will make a more solid infill and also increase the rigidity.

Drawer v3, 160x100x42mm

This is one of the nicest drawers I found. Very easily editable, nice to use, fully functional. I am building a full wall of these. I have to note that on the picture, a lot of parts are cut out, because I wanted to save filament - so I just made a lot of holes in the parts... Sorry for butchering the beautiful design. All and all, this is amazing. Thank you for making this awesome design. Edit: Added a photo of the finished set. It is truly amazing.

I did not plan on doing it, since it is not the nicest and the best way to print these to make them lighter. In this configuration, they are also a bit fragile, especially if you do it from a silk filament. I do not advise on printing it unless the user has experience. With all that said, I published the profile, you can take a look and decide if it is worth it for you.

Can I suggest 1 thing? it would be awesome to add some small latches first to block off falling off and second that would "click on" when fully pushed. there is quite huge area on the bottom that would be perfect for such mechanism. It could be even small bumps added on the side of walls so it would make more friction between walls. Other than that, I really adore that amazing desing ! Would buy it if I would see it in shop

@benjaminkott, I don't have the enough superlatives for your underdesk design. It's remarkable, truly. My toddler put it through rigorous testing today, pulling and pushing the drawers morning and afternoon and it held up wonderfully. It's not only toddler-proof, and toddler-safe since it doesn't just fall out anymore, but also adds a great deal of storage and organisation to my garage. I'm looking forward to extending this setup to other desks in the house. This has become one of my favourite 3D printing projects. Observing your interaction with the community and your iterative design improvements has been both insightful and motivating. It's pushed me to start learning Fusion360, hoping to someday create something even fractionally as impactful as your work. I have a small piece of feedback regarding the handle inserts. They seem quite snug, requiring a bit of effort (I used a mallet!) to fit them into place. This might be related to the specific filament I used, Bambu PLA-CF (pain-in-the-butt), but I was wondering if this tight fit was intentional or it's just me. In retrospect, a test print before committing to the full batch would have been wise! Anyway, it's nothing I can't fix with some scaling (probably -1/%) adjustments in the slicer. A variant I'd love to see is the incorporation of fine mesh or honeycomb patterns on parts of the drawer sides or bottom. This doesn't necessitate the entire side being designed this way; rather, strategic sections could offer this patterning, allowing solid areas to remain while providing ventilation and a means for dust and debris to escape. Such a design could enhance the practicality and aesthetic of the drawers even further. Thank you for your incredible effort and the dedication you've shown through your work. And for Fusion360 files and making it parametric. I printed the drawers and holders and handle inserts in different colours to help preserve my filament supply. The drawer and holder were scaled up in Fusion360 to 250Wx150Dx70H (2mm wall). The latest enclosed holder design doesn't flex as much as the previous semi-open version at this extreme width, so thank you very much for that! And please excuse the clutter visible in my garage photos :) Holder: eSun PLA+ Black Drawer: eSun PLA+ Grey Handles: Bambu PLA-CF Red Plate: Textured PEI PS: It's so silly that ratings are only for profiles printed, otherwise I would have given you 5 stars easily :(

Woah, a lot to unpack here. Thx a lot for your warm words, it feels like the effort was worth it! I am now ~ 4 Months into Fusion 360, CAD, and 3D Printing - all the feedback I get is appreciated. Again thx a lot! I got into 3D printing because the things I needed did not exist or did not suit my needs. I am an open-source developer working for a content management system. Everything we do is open source and we believe we can inspire people to share their knowledge. I learned a lot from people putting effort into explaining stuff on YouTube. This is my way to give back to the community that taught me so much. I am really glad that this is appreciated if someone learned something or can see how I solve problems in Fusion 360, and improve their work. Mission accomplished. Regarding the handles, I tried to iterate and let people reuse parts they already had printed. When I noticed that I made a huge mistake with the initial design of the holder... (layer adhesion). I tried to save everything people already have and incorporate the feedback I got - stackable, on-desk usage, pull protection. So I decided to keep what people liked, the clean design and almost invisible frame, and made this a corner store. I needed to find a solution to allow handles without changing the original design, so people can reuse their drawers, they only compromise the pull-out protection and the rounded corners on the back of the drawer that make it a bit easier to use because it will not get stuck on the hard corner. With all that in mind, I decided to go press fit, you need some force to get them in, but they will usually hold without any glue, so people can exchange them if they change their minds. You can get them out again, exchange them, and they still hold without glue. When designing this from scratch I probably would go for some snapping but I am currently pleased with the solution. Regarding the ratings, and points. Sharing the Source Files and telling everyone to customize everything is probably not the best idea if you are trying to get ratings or points 😅. But I still think it´s worth it. I read that downloads and prints are counted and ratings are possible if you exchange the step files in the original 3mf profiles, but I guess that's cheating - so don't do it! Regarding Patterns, I don't like the honeycomb pattern looks. It always reminds me of cheap 3D prints, not a premium product. I thought about changing the structure to a more open, filament-saving version, maybe a faster printable version. But it requires more testing, not wanna have them fail again the durability test. As mentioned I am not a professionally trained product designer, so I am not sure what will work and need to play around with it. Probably when my wife does not notice that I am printing drawers again. For the dust debris stuff, I need to read this up to understand where it´s coming from and what smart people suggest for that ^^. P.S: The color combination looks nice 😊.

I had only done some 2D CAD design previously. After seeing your drawer design, I created an account with Autodesk, downloaded and installed Fusion 360, looked up on youtube how to change parameters and export stl, imported the stl one after another onto multiple plates in Bambu Studio, made sure I have correct settings referencing your 3mf file in another Bambu Studio window, sent one plate at a time to my X1C, and 18 hours later, I have a set of little drawers that are custom fit next to the keyboard tray under my desk. All parts printed out perfectly. Thank you so much for designing and sharing this with us here. Much appreciated. p.s. dimensions: Width: 135mm depth: 200mm height: 42mm

Sounds and Looks Great! Thx for sharing your experience! Your case is a perfect example of why such models need to be customizable. I´ve seen more people doing this on MakerWorld and providing the resources to do so. That´s the true value of 3D Printing. Love it! printed more for small parts storage in my garage, thanks for the stacking system, works great. Will likely do a couple more stacks. Gonna print different coloured handles and put labels on them for easy identification.

Very beautiful model and nice minimalistic design! Printed one more - slightly changed the holder by reducing the amount of filament used (by cutting off the center part) and also replaced the drawer bottom with honeycomb patern to also reduce the plastic consumption.

Yes, I've used negative modifier and cut off top part of it. Also I've used modified with 0% infill with pattern for bottom layer to achieve honeycomb texture at the bottom.
