Description
Six-Color Rainbow Stage for M4 Mac Mini + MagSafe
Since the 2019 commissioning of Apple's icon “Spaceship” corporate headquarters in Cupertino, six brightly-colored arches have been prominently featured in the center of the ring, in a modern reference to the early “six-color” rainbow Apple logo used from 1977-1999. Originally used as a concert stage for a Lady Gaga performance, the iconic structure has remained as a permanent fixture of the campus, and is often featured in Apple product introduction videos and other marketing materials.
Now you can have a miniature “Six-Color Rainbow Stage” on your desk, decorating your 2024+ Mac Mini. Two versions are available: one has a place to add a MagSafe charging puck under the arches, and the other can be printed in multiple colors to feature the Apple logo.
Notes on the MagSafe Option
Charger Compatibility
The MagSafe version of the base has a cut-out sized for the original 15W MagSafe charger, which fits securely without any adhesive. This version has a short section of strain relief where the cable meets the puck. The 25W MagSafe charger puck introduced is slightly thinner and smaller in diameter (and has a braided cable with no strain relief). To use the more-recent MagSafe charger, you may want to secure it with double-sided tape or superglue.
Device Compatibility
The arcs were sized and shaped to provide a balance between a literal to-scale appearance and making room for MagSafe devices to charge underneath. As designed, an iPhone 16 Pro Max can only just barely fit to charge with a Peak Design Everyday Case on it – this is not recommended. A caseless 16 Pro Max or any smaller phone should fit and charge without any issue. It's a particularly great place to charge AirPods.
Print Notes
Each lid prints with the upper surface down on the plate. Choose a plate to suit your desired surface finish (smooth or textured). Supports are required and provided in the print profile for the MagSafe pocket and a recess at the back that leaves room for camera bumps. For the cleanest separation of supports, use the AMS and (for a PLA print) configure PETG to be used for the Support Interface Layer when slicing. If printing the lid in PETG, use PLA for the interface layer.
In the provided print profile, each arch prints on a separate plate – they are quick prints. In building my own, I expedited the process by printing 3 arches at a time quickly. To do this, load the colors in the AMS, arrange the objects together on a plate, and chang the slicing mode from “By Layer” to “By Object”. This isn't necessary though…
Assembly Notes
Assembly is pretty trivial. The arches should fit into the appropriate recesses in the lid snugly without difficulty. If they are a bit tight, trim slightly. If they are too loose or you wish to make it a permanent assembly, add a dab of superglue.
Hat tip to MakerWorld creator Bas van der Ploeg for the inspiration. Though my design isn't really a “remix”, I want to acknowledge where the idea came from.
