Filament Rack for IKEA Billy Bookcase

I had an old Billy bookcase from IKEA that was gathering dust and had the idea to repurpose it to help organize all my 3D printing filament and accessories. After spending a bunch of time on some R&D I'm finally happy with the model and I'm making it publicly available for anyone to print. The entire filament rack is designed so it can be printed on a single build plate and mounted with four 20mm M3 socket-head screws, no additional hardware required!

Features

  • [NEW] Added print profile for combo filament rack and holder for up to four build plates
  • Prints on a single build plate and assembles in seconds; no glue or hardware required for assembly
  • Store up to four standard 1kg spools; designed to work with Bambu reusable spools (diameter of 200mm)
  • Low-profile truss design minimizes wasted vertical space; mix and match with your Billy shelves to make the most of your space
  • Top of the rack is completely flat allowing you to place the Billy shelves on top of an empty rack
  • Works on flat surfaces; spools sit above the bottom allowing you to move the rack to a work surface

Printing Tips

  • All testing and prototypes printed in Bambu PLA Basic; other materials might perform better but are not necessary
  • Parts should assemble with minimal effort; if you're having trouble getting pieces to fit try calibrating your flow rate
  • PLA can warp so ensure your build plate is clean or maybe use that glue you've been saving 😉

One request - could you adjust these to fit 5 spools? I am already using 5 spools on them as-is but the spools on each end aren't in the filleted area of the cross beams so they sit higher than the other 3 spools. I also think thinning the 2 end beams by 1-2mm would give the spools a little wiggle room. Only the area between the cross beams would need to be thinned really.

Thank you for the feedback, I can definitely look into it. To be honest the design went through a lot of revisions so at some point I settled on four spools and then never really reconsidered it once I got to the final design. I'm working on another project at the moment but I will try some things when I have print time and let you know!

I sometimes have issues with printing that very front piece, not sure why that happens, gets all spaghettied. But when this does print fine, as you can tell, I love it. I already had this bookshelf and I needed a place to store all my filaments. This does the job beautifully. I do put 5 on each instead of the intended 4. It still works. I still got 2 more to print when I get a free printer.

Brilliant design! The pre-tensioning of the lower element of the beam is very smart, and combining that with the click-together joint - genius. My Billy is very pleased with himself.

Hello, Thanks for your amazing work ! I printed one to try, but I have an Ikea Alex ( door version ) and it's a little too big unfortunately. Could you make a shorter version ( Inner Width : 31.5 cm ) if it don't takes a lot of time ? Thanks :)

This is amazing. I am blown away by how clever the design is as well as how great everything fits together and how strong the end result is. This thing is so underrated!
