Description

Rolex Explorer II GMT Watch Inspired Clock

The Rolex Explorer II, introduced in 1971, is a symbol of adventure and endurance. Known for its striking white "Polar" dial and orange 24-hour GMT hand, it has become the go-to timepiece for explorers and adventurers. This clock design pays homage to the rugged elegance of the Rolex Explorer II, bringing a piece of exploration history into your home or workspace. Whether you're a horology enthusiast or an admirer of classic timepieces, this clock captures the spirit of adventure embodied by the Explorer II.

Note: This clock is a sort of “pseudo-GMT”. Essentially you are able to track two time zones instead of three, as the bezel does not rotate. The GMT hand will just show the hour for the second time zone, or GMT time if you wish.

Assembly Instructions

  1. Bezel and Dial:
    1. Line up the top of the bezel with the top of the dial.
    2. Use 4 M3 screws to attach the dial to the bezel through the 4 tabs.

  2. Clock Mechanism:
    1. Insert the clock mechanism into the slot on the back of the dial, ensuring it is fully seated.
    2. Attach the thin brass nut onto the post protruding from the front of the dial and tighten.
My omega speedmaster clock is shown here, but the process is the same
  1. Hands:
    1. Attach the hour hand first, pushing it onto the larger part of the post as far as it will go without excessive force.
    2. Next, align the hour hand with the 12 o'clock index
    3. For the GMT hand, find the time zone you wish to follow and see how many hours ahead or behind your time it is
    4. Align the GMT hand with the hour index that you found in the previous step, while making sure not to move the hour hand from the 12 o'clock position
    5. Press the GMT hand onto the same post as the hour hand, making sure both are fully seated
    6. Next, attach the minute hand similarly onto the smaller part of the post.
    7. For the second hand, pry the small pin piece from the second hand included in the clock kit. Push the pin through the printed second hand from the top, and insert the end of the pin into the hole at the end of the mechanism post.
      1. You may need to add a small drop of glue to get the second hand to stick to the pin
    8. Ensure all hands move freely without contacting each other

  1. Final Steps:
    1. Insert the battery into the mechanism.
    2. Set the time.

Enjoy your Rolex Explorer II inspired clock!
