Description

Yarn ball holder with ball bearing - knitting gadget - several sizes - 10 - 20 cm

My wife wanted a spool holder for knitting because she was not satisfied with the trays she often used.
For this reason, I designed this holder. Thanks to the built-in ball bearing, the wool/yarn can be unrolled super easily and silently.

The holder consists of a total of 5 parts, 3 of which have to be printed in any case.
The ball bearing and the M8x30 screw can also be printed, although I would prefer to use metal parts due to the weight alone.

For the rod, I would recommend a 10 - 15 mm wide brim and possibly supports for the holes in the bottom of the base. Otherwise, no supports are needed.

Since I wanted the print to be as smooth and stable as possible, I printed everything with 0.16 mm layer height, 3 walls and 15% infill. But 0.2 mm layer height is absolutely sufficient.

Assembly:

  1. insert the ball bearing into the base with a little pressure. Glue is not necessary.
  2. insert the screw from below through the base and the plate (plate with the small elevation around the hole in the direction of the ball bearing).
  3. now screw the rod onto the screw until the rod is fully in contact with the plate and sufficiently secured. (Do not overtighten - after tight comes off)

Info:

All lengths of the rod can be combined with any version!

Dimensions of the 10 cm version:

  • Base diameter 100 mm, height 15 mm
  • Plate diameter 85 mm, height 3.8 mm
  • Rod diameter 15 mm (except base and tip), 30 mm thread depth, height 160 mm

Dimensions of the 12 cm version:

  • Base diameter 120 mm, height 15 mm
  • Plate diameter 105 mm, height 3.8 mm
  • Rod diameter 15 mm (except base and tip), 30 mm thread depth, height 160 mm

Dimensions of the 14 cm version:

  • Base diameter 140 mm, height 15 mm
  • Plate diameter 125 mm, height 3.8 mm
  • Rod diameter 15 mm (except base and tip), 30 mm thread depth, height 160 mm

Dimensions of the 16 cm version:

  • Base diameter 160 mm, height 15 mm
  • Plate diameter 145 mm, height 3.8 mm
  • Rod diameter 15 mm (except base and tip), 30 mm thread depth, height 180 mm

Dimensions of the 18 cm version:

  • Base diameter 180 mm, height 15 mm
  • Plate diameter 165 mm, height 3.8 mm
  • Rod diameter 15 mm (except base and tip), 30 mm thread depth, height 180 mm

Dimensions of the 20 cm version:

  • Base diameter 200 mm, height 15 mm
  • Plate diameter 185 mm, height 3.8 mm
  • Rod diameter 15 mm (except base and tip), 30 mm thread depth, height 180 mm

Additional parts required:
REQUIRED

  • 1 x 608 ZZ ball bearing 8mm x 22mm x 7mm (https://amzn.eu/d/9sR76Qd)
  • 1 x M8 x 30 mm pan head screws with hexagon socket - ISO 7380 or similar (https://amzn.eu/d/3a1vN1G)

OPTIONAL

  • 5 x rubber feet 10 x 2 mm (https://amzn.eu/d/hfvY4pd)

Both the ball bearing and the M8 screw can of course also be printed.
There are many models here on Makerworld that would be suitable for this. (!!! Not tested - only as an example !!! https://makerworld.com/en/models/378392 / https://makerworld.com/en/models/473167)
I would be very happy to receive Makes with completely printed parts - I'm curious to see how well it works. But maybe I'll also test it myself :)

I opted for purchased components because of the weight (more weight = better stability) and the possible running noise.
The ball bearing and the metal screw weigh a good 25 g together. That provides a lot of stability.

Future extensions:

  • 2-part rod, upper part with variable length can be attached.
  • Suitable weights as an insert for the base (round container with fishing lead or coins. Is placed around the ball bearing in the base).

Changelog:

  • 2024-06-09
    • 5 more sizes added. The following sizes are now available. 10/12/14/16/18/20 cm. The rod is now also available in the lengths 10/12/14/16/18/20 cm.

Other sizes:
If you would like more sizes, please let me know.

Have fun reprinting.
And always remember: happy wife, happy life xD
