Description

A configurable and modular system for storing your kitchen knives.  With blocks custom to each knife, that can be attached together directly or with angled connectors that can be adjusted to allow all kinds of designs and layouts.  Or keep it simple and just make a sleeve to cover the blade while it's in your drawer.

When you open this to customize you will first choose what piece you want to customize: a knife holder, a connector block, or an angled end.  Depending on which you choose you can then manipulate the settings and hit generate to see what it will look like.

Before you begin it is quite important to find the clearance you will require to get a snug fit for the connectors that takes a bit of pushing to put together but not so much that you need a hammer because you then won't be able to disconnect if you want to add things in future.  To find your clearance value, generate a small knife holder and a small connector block.  Load them in your slicer, scale the vertical to 20% and print.  If it's too tight increase the clearance and try again, too loose then decrease the clearance.

Knife Holder

The knife holder can be with or without connectors.  The customizer takes the dimensions of your knife and makes an exact fit for them, this is so it grabs the knife when it's just a sleeve with no connectors.  If you are making a knife block with connectors it's worth adding a little extra mm to your dimensions so the knife can slide freely.  You can set the handle width for each knife which controls how wide the block is to stop the handles jamming into each other.  To keep things simple it's worth finding your widest knife handle and using that for all your knives.

Connectors

You can make connectors that simply attach the blocks together or if you make them big enough you get the option to hollow out the middle to make them into containers for utensils, chop sticks, skewers etc.  If you connect the blocks in a ring then there will always be a hole in the middle the size of the number of blocks times the handle width, you can use that hole to hide the wider knives, or embrace it and make it bigger so that you can put your kitchen roll in there.  If you set the center radius to 20mm or more and the angle to more than 20 degrees you can then cutout the middle of the connector turning it into a container, you can make the container deeper and/or taller, and event divide it into segments depending what you want to store in it.  If you set the angle to 0 degrees you get a pair of bowties for connecting blocks directly to each other.  If your create knife holders with different handle widths you can add adjustments to the left or right of the connector block to adjust for that.

Angled Ends

If you want a traditional knife block, you can attach all of the blocks to each other and then use these angled ends to set it at whatever angle you want.  There are settings for the support length and angle because you have to extend the support forward to keep it past the center of gravity of you knives.

I've tried to make it as flexible as possible, you could colour code the knife blocks for dairy, meat, veg.  Put them in a line, in a circle or alternate the connectors and make a wave of knives.  It'll be great to see how people use this.  For me, the colour in the pictures matches my kitchen and gives me storage for all my knives and steel.
