Description

Ergonomic Left and right hand mouse

NEW

Uploaded a gif with a 360 view, a video of the mouse in use and assembly with Bambu Lab component kit.

After testing with the Bambu Lab Kit I was very impressed and find this mouse a pleasure to use.

The design

This type of mouse design is more commonly known as a “hand shoe mouse”. Hand shoe type mouses are the top in terms of ergononics and are designed to fully support your hand. They retail for well over 100$.

I did not find any 3d models for this kind of mouse and felt it would be fun to create a 3d model of it. I wanted to learn to work with curves in Freecad and thought that this would be a fun project. I must admit that it became quite an adventure and the type of project that you had to finish considering the time invested. Here is a sampling of some the design iterations:

In the end, I am happy I finished the project. This is probably the most comfortable mouse I have ever used. Your hand feels completely supported and relaxed and I am looking forward to using it on a daily basis. I must admit that the comfort of this mouse kept me motitivated to finish the project.

There is a model for both right and left hand use (buttons need to be assigned in Windows) and the design works with the Bambu Lab wireless mouse kit . Also, I re-designed the Bambu Lab circuit board holder to remove the need for screws. It now uses pivoting “print in place tabs”.

You can also customize the side insert and I have uploaded file “blank insert” for this purpose. If you want to use it for the left hand version you will need to mirror it.

Assembly

The model consist of 6 parts (excluding the Bambu Lab wireless mouse kit. It is easy to assemble and the included instruction gif shows how.

Different parts are required for the left and right hand versions. The 3mf files have the correct parts for each. The left hand version uses a shorther circuit board holder cylinder.

3d printing

Not only was this model challenging to create but 3d printing it proved to be an even greater challenge. This is a very difficult part to slice and orient because of the numerous curves. Don't even try to print this without support.

After much trial and error I found the best way to print this is in an almost vertical orientation with a slight twist to the side. This way the support will not affect the surface of the mouse where your hand rest. I have provided 3mf files with the best orientations. You will use support but don't despair, it will detach nicely and the end product is well worth it.

I STRONGLY SUGGEST YOU USE THE PRINT PROFILES AND 3MF FILES WHICH I PROVIDED.

CUT OUT AROUND THE MOUSE BUTTONS TO REMOVE SUPPORT AND REMOVE THE SUPPORT BY LAYERS AND NOT BY PULLING AT ONCE.

The model will work with the A1 mini, P1 and X1.

My designs

I enjoy creating 3d models that others can use and appreciate. It is a very fun pastime. I find it very rewarding to see my models downloaded and printed. I put lots of thought, time and effort to create each model print out multiple iterations to make sure it works just right.

If you liked my model and wish to encourage me please give it a like or a boost. If you wish you can also help me with my filament costs. Thank you.

So much support material on inside it broke a button trying to get it all out. Complete waste of five hours and filament.

First thank you for the feedback and sorry to hear about that. It is a complex model to print and with all the curves etc. support is unavoidable and you don't really want it on the surface where your hand is. I did not have your issue but I reinforced the buttons and the interior when designing to avoid this. What filament did you use ? Did you use one of my print profiles and if so which one? Also, did you pull off the support all at once or by layers? It would be great to have this info to help others. Thank you NOTE: Although I did not have this issue I updated the printing instructions with a mention to exercice caution when removing the filament.

Thank you for the update it is always very helpful. I used PETG which is a bit more flexible but did not try PLA. More flexibility is probably a better thing for the mouse buttons and the left one has a longer travel. Support is required for the opening around the mouse buttons. Did you cut around the openings of the mouse buttons to remove support there? The bottom left of the left mouse button has support that may have caused this. I used an exacto to remove the support. Although I am sad to hear the button broke off did you try the feel of the mouse and what did you think? Thank you

Thank you. It was more work to get it working but saw that left handed people were left out of most designs and decided to implement it.
