Description

Similar to the A1, I found out that the A1 Mini does not have active exhaust or intake fan cooling for internal circuits (motherboard, processor, power supply). So I wanted to create an adapter for a standard 40mm pc fan to mount up to the side of the printer to exhaust hot air. This part / mod is ideal for those using the A1 Mini in a non-climate controlled space such as an enclosure, garage, shed, basement, print farms, etc. However it can be used on any A1 Mini and in theory should help keep internal temperature low and decrease risk of failure due to heat build up.

Note: This is only for the A1 Mini not for the A1, If you own a A1 use this model instead.

Updates:

  • Added Wide variation with internal manifold / air duct.

Features:

  • Improves airflow by drawing air out from the a1 chassis/base and reduce temperatures for internal circuits
  • Clip-on / Slide on non-permanent attachment, does not require any modification to the A1 itself.
  • Uses standard PC case fan screws
  • Low Profile only 3mm thickness

Materials Needed to assemble:

  • 1, 40mm fans. I used a Noctua NF-A4x10 5V and NF-A4x20 5V in testing, but most 40mm fans should fit.
Note: 20mm Thick fans typically provide more static pressure so would provide in theory better performance.
  • (4) standard pc case fan screws per shroud (to attach the 40mm fan)
  • Standard USB to 4pin fan splitter cable and USB power adapter. You may need 2 cables if you are installing 3 fans.

Print and Assembly Notes:

  1. Once printed, clean up brim with deburring tool
  2. Ensure the exhaust is pointing away from the printer (pushing away from the C shape of the part), However it can also be used as an intake fan likely without issue due to small size of airholes on the A1 Mini.
  3. Insert (4) screws in Z or X pattern and tighten evenly
  4. Attach fan mount clip/'s to the printer and your done!
  5. Optional - If you would like to add a decorative cover you will see multiple print profiles for colors, including multicolor, single color, and no grill fan covers, all of which are compatible with the fan mount clip.

Print Profile Notes:

Nozzle: Suggest 0.4mm nozzle for precision fit
Wall Loops: 5 wall loops on 0.4mm nozzle, 0.6mm nozzle not recommended due to decreased layer adhesion.
Layer Height: Suggest 0.16 or 0.20 to maximize strength and reduce overhangs (0.16mm default for slim, 0.20mm default for full width)
Infill: 30% gyroid
Brim: 5mm brim default
Material: PETG for Exhaust, PLA might be okay when used as intake, but suggest PETG for functional parts.
Color: Any
Print Orientation: Print on side.
Supports: Snug Normal Supports. 53 Degree Threshold angle, Top Z Distance 0.15mm, Bottom Z Distance 0.15mm, 3 top interface layers, 0.3mm Top Interface Spacing.
3d Printers: Should be printable on any printer.
Filament amount required: 19.72g for slim version, 32.65g for full width version.

nice! what was the height of your fan? looks like maybe 30mm? I can always add new covers for that size.

yes it’s 30mm thick, just happened to be in one of my junk bins. I save way too much useless stuff the wife would say but always end up finding a use for it eventually. I know if I were to throw away some “junk” that I would need something in that junk the next day…lol

How are you powering the fan?

I'm powering the fan with a usb to 4 pin connector plugged into a usb port on my powerstrip. Noctua fans come with the usb to 4 pin adapters on the 5v fans. Alternatively if you use a 12v fan you can get 12v to 4 pin fan power supply on amazon/ali (e.g. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B084JG4619/) or various other online seller pretty inexpensively. Just me sure to use 5v or 12v depending on voltage of the 40mm fan you have.
