Super Duster (for 6x2mm magnets) - Filament Guide and Dust Filter

⚠️ If you have other magnet sizes:

I wanted to design a suitable filament guide for my AMS protectors to prevent the almost empty spools from jumping around and at the same time I wanted to solve another problem - cleaning the filament from dust, right before the first introduction to the filament guide system. Many users store their filaments openly and they tend to attract dust, and the cheaper filaments in particular often come from the factory already very dusty. This will lead to problems with the AMS/hub or extruder later.

Super Duster can be attached to any 3D-Printer with PTFE tube guide!

Super Duster installed on the Voron Trident
Super Duster installed on the AMSlite (BL A1/A1mini) with the AMSlite PTFE Tube Easy-Clip-Connector
Super Duster installed on the Prusa MK3S+

The Super Duster is an “easy-print-in-place design” and only requires 4 magnets and 2 pieces (10x15mm) of a sponge cloth to keep the filament dust-free. Optionally, I highly recommend using two 4mm steel balls per Super Duster to minimize friction and smoother movement on the spool.

About PTFE tubing length:

My tests with my AMS protectors have shown that about 100mm length is good for keeping the almost empty filament spools from jumping around. But I would still recommend the Spool-Weights (such as one of these - I❤️this design from @humebeam). The filament spools are very different and only with such a Spool-Weight good filament processing can be guaranteed until the end of the filament on the spool.

If you only want to use the dust filter function (if you always use spool weights), then PTFE tubing piece can also be shorter (around 60mm).

Print Instructions (or just use one of my print-profiles!😍)

  • first layer line width: 0.47mm (0.4 mm Nozzle) (for perfect look of the “face”)
  • first layer speed: 10ms per second (for perfect look of the bambu-logo)
  • first layer infill: 50ms per second
  • top surface: 0.38mm
  • 2 perimeter, 5 top, 3 bottom layer, 15% infill
  • print layer height: 0.2mm
  • WALL generator: Arachne

Sources of hardware:

Sponge Cloths (they should be about 5mm thick) - one piece would be more than enough! 😉

Assembly instructions:

Step 1.

After print, bend Super Duster's print-in-place hinge back and forth quickly and forcefully, to achieve smooth movement (with PETG it usually becomes more difficult, but after several movements it also becomes smooth)

Step 2.

Cut a 10mm strip of sponge cloth…
… and then cut the strip into 15mm long pieces. (It is best to print this cutting template - STL is attached here or use Cutting_Template print profile.)

Step 3. (optional!)

Place steel balls in the two deeper holes, check whether they stick out about 1.5mm from the bottom and stick them in place with a drop of superglue!
Steel balls should stick out about 1.5mm
Steel balls should stick out about 1.5mm

Step 4.

Press strips of sponge cloth into the corresponding openings in Super Duster. They should hold up wonderfully just like that. If not - a small drop of superglue under the strip will also solve the problem!

Step 5.

Drip a small drop of superglue into the magnet openings…
… and press the magnet in. Magnets should be flush with the surface and not stick out…
If necessary, use pliers to push the magnets in completely.

Step 6.

Cut off about 100mm of PTFE tubing and press it firmly into the PTFE opening. It's best to wear rubber/latex gloves, then PTFE won't slip through...
PTFE tubing should go through to the end of the opening and be clearly visible.

Done! :-)

Hi! 🖐️😃 You should just be able to put them in. However, they should not fail, but get stuck in the end. Then just a drop of superglue on it and you're done! 🦾😎
