Description

Key Advantages

  • Only 7g of filament per ring.
  • Compatible spool brand name impressed.
  • Rounded contour helps with traction, avoids pullback errors and stabilizes the spool inside the AMS.
  • Rounded contour lowers the chance of damaging plastic storage bags.
  • Flat variant, prints even faster and uses <5g of filament.

Description

This isn't merely a typical cardboard spool adapter. By decreasing its contact area by approximately 50-60% compared to standard adapters, it significantly enhances contact pressure. Consider it akin to winter tires on a car, which generally require higher pressure to minimize their contact area with the ground. Additionally, its rounded edges help stablizing the Spool inside the AMS and minimize the likelihood of damaging plastic vacuum bags. The adapter is not only lightweight, weighing a mere 7 grams of filament, but it is also reusable and easily attaches in the same manner as conventional adapters.

This adapter has proven to be a game-changer, eliminating the need for other AMS modifications that claim to address retraction and entanglement issues. Remarkably, I’ve found that spool weights are no longer necessary. However, as with any solution, individual results may vary. Happy printing!

Tolerances

Compared to plastic spools, cardboard spools are more vulnerable to various external factors, such as moisture, temperature fluctuations, and variations in the production process (up to +/-2mm). Consequently, you may encounter slight variations in the fit, which can range from slightly looser to tighter. In extreme cases, the spool adapter may not fit at all. In these scenarios, you can make the necessary adjustments to the model's scale using the Bambu Slicer for both the X and Y axes. Ensure that you uncheck the "uniform scale" option before proceeding. If your spool's diameter exceeds the default setting, consider increasing the scale by 1%. Conversely, if your spool's diameter is smaller, reduce the scale by 1%, and your setup should be ready for use.

Printing

When it comes to printing, you should produce two adapters for each cardboard spool. It is advisable to steer clear of materials that exhibit low friction, such as Silk-PLA, to ensure optimal performance. Most of the time I use Standard PLA.

This adapter is available for other brand's cardboard spools (Link to Collection):

Works great on the standard PLA from Inland. it didn't seem to fit my HighSpeed PLA (CORRECTION: it is a PLA + spool that it doesn't seem to fit.) spool but I think that's because I'm just an idiot. I may also just be remembering wrong. either way these things print fast as heck and are all you need. Thanks for saving my AMS!

If you find the time I would appreciate you measuring the HS PLA spool. If its another diameter, I can hook you up with the corrrect file. I need the diameter of the spool and the thickness of the cardboard on each side. Do 3 to 5 measurements around the spool.

Will do. it appears I remembered wrong. it is the PLA + they have red lettering. I'm new to all this and I ended up using electrical tape around the rim. but it seems to be having issues with my 1 spool of PLA + also. I'll need to pick up a new spool of it since I don't want to give you measurements from my untaped/possibly warped single spool of it. but I'm sure I'll remember next time I'm at MicroCenter. I'll pick up a new color and get some accurate measurements for you! Thanks a million!

Alright I bought a new PLA + spool from Inland. I can measure wall thickness and have done so, but what's the correct/accurate method of measuring diameter, I regret that my geometry knowledge has apparently significantly diminished with age. I have a regular sized micrometer, a circle drawing tool (compass?), regular tape measures with imperial measurements. Oh... Wait, maybe my wife's fabric/rolly/flexy measuring tape thing. I know that goes to milimeters. Anyway, do I just go straight across, try to hit the center and do it multiple times, or is there a better method?

Unfortunately the design does not allow my lid to close on my AMS.

The adapter's outer size is 200mm and the AMS allows for 202mm spools. If this adapter causes the lid to not close there are three possible reasons: 1.) the cardboard spool is larger than 199mm 2.) the cardboard spool is deformed (elliptical) 3.) the adapter is not properly installed. this can happen when the retention lip is not fully inside the cardboard spool but rather on the outside causing the adapter to wrap making its effective outer diameter bigger

can you completely shut the ams with this ring?

yes. Use the flat variant if you are unsure but both variants are within the supported 202mm diameter.

These work very well for Inland rolls. They are now my go to adapters for AMS.
