I printed off and made a Unicorn LED Night Light for my Daughters 5th Birthday. My Son also wanted a Night Light but he wanted something else. Since he loves Fire Trucks and Firefighters and I couldn't find anything like it, I designed this in OnShape.
I just used black PLA for the body, back and wheels and white PLA for the diffuser plate and printed everything with 100% infill. I found using a textured PEI coated build plate gives a nicer finish to the diffuser plate when its not light up as its better at hiding and slight imperfections.
Assembly
- Glue the plate into the body, I used just a few small dabs of CA glue along the outside edge of the plate and make make sure its sitting flat on the body.
- Install the LEDs into the back plate, I put the strip right against the back wall. It uses about 1 Metre of LED strip. I used these from Amazon and comes with a remote to change colour, brightness etc. and USB plug for simplicity. The adhesive strip should be enough to hold the strip in place, i added a few dabs of CA glue just in case. Youll also need to file or cut a hole for the USB cable to come out the back. I just filed a channel for the USB cable near the wheel.
- I added 4 old 608 bearings I had laying around in the bottom wheels of the back for extra stability although this is totally optionally and should be fine without.
- Slide the back into the front and add a bit more CA glue around the seam to make it permanent
- Mount the LED Strip IR receiver, if you strip has one, along the a side so it can detect the remote from the front. Or you can just mount it on the back.
- Glue the centre wheel hubs into the middle with CA
