Description

Hey I am still working on this model so feel free to print the files and give me feedback on how to improve the design.

I have so many cables on my desktop and I wanted them to be more accessible and organized so I designed this cable organizer that pulls the cables back to its original position. All the parts can be 3D printed without support.

Currently I am still trying to get the springs right so there are 2 springs I tried so far in the model. Definetley use PETG for the Springs and look for the seam in your slicer as mine often tried to put the seam on the connection point between cable and spring wich is not really great for longevity as it will likely break off from there. If you have any Ideas of improving on this design let me know. I am also planing on modeling some kind of tray for the organizer so more than one can be placed next to each other and clamped on the desk.

Hope you like the model It is definetley my most thought about model because this is already the 6th iteration I think lol.

Have fun printing and check for updates on the model.

Update: 09.03.24: Retracting Cable Organizer V2

I still struggle with my cable not fully retracting but now with 2 springs atleast i get linear force pulling on the cable when retracting

Very interesting idea, but it seems like having the spring attached to the cable would be annoying. Are you supposed to detach it once extended? Have you thought about using flat usb cables, so that the spring can stay inside the base?

No the Spring is supposed to stay attached but it is just a pressfit for my current cable so detaching is not a hassle. Yeah i thought about it but I didn`t have any flat cables lying around so I haven`t tried. If I were to guess, it would be even worse though as they r usually even less stiff as the round ones.

In my current Iteration the cable holding part is also quite thick so thats something I will make smaller once I came up with a better solution, that is if I come up with a better one :D.

very interested in this. however, you uploaded the stl as a combination of all the parts, rather than being individual, so it can't be printed

Hi in your slicer you can right click the model and split it into Objects. That is how you can print the parts seperately but don't mind the case yet just print the retracting mechanism. It's still not practical yet I can't get the cable to retract reliably... maybe you have a solution to it ? :)
