Description

Boost Me

If you enjoyed this model and want to encourage me to come up with more original and innovative designs please consider boosting this model.  I mainly design more unique and complex models that take longer to print.  Due to print time they get downoloaded less frequently than quick to print models.  Boost are a way to compensatie for this and are always greatly appreciated.   Thank you

Design

This is a kayak day hatch that can be easily retrofitted to existing kayaks. The hatch cover is 7 inch in diameter and the opening is 5.5 inches. The parts can also be scaled if you need a smaller or larger day hatch.

The day hatch is meant to be installed behind the cockpit and provides easy access to items such as water bottles, drinks, snacks etc.

To install:

  1. Finish sand and give the parts a coat of epoxy.
  2. Cut an opening in the deck.
  3. There is a recess in the rim base so that the inner supports can be inserted from the underside of the deck. The idea is to sandwich the deck between the inner supports and the rim base using thickened epoxy. The design allows a deck thickness of 1/8 to about 3/8.
  4. Clamp up the inner supports and rim base on the top and bottom of the deck until the epoxy dries.
  5. Use a tie-wrap to affix a bag on the bottom lid and screw on.
  6. Tie the cover to the rim base using the openings provided for this.
  7. Screw on the top lid.

The cover is a screw on cover. The hatch cover and rim both have a hole so that a cord can be inserted to prevent loss of the hatch cover.

There is also a bottom lid that screws on to the rim part from below. It has a groove and is designed to allow attaching a canvas or plastic bag to keep contents within easy reach.

I did not yet get around to finishing the parts but will give them a finish sanding and a coat of epoxy.

I am still learning how to best use my X1C but be sure to enable support for the hatch cover and rim. Also, position the parts to that they are both upright as surface finish will be better.

If there is interest I can upload a cut-out template for use with a trim router.

I have a few other parts that I made for my kayaks and will be uploading those as well.

Enjoy and happy kayaking!

My designs

I enjoy creating 3d models that others can use and appreciate.  It is a very fun pastime.   I find it very rewarding to see my models downloaded and printed.  I put lots of thought, time and effort to create each model print out multiple iterations to make sure it works just right.

If you liked my model and wish to encourage me please give it a like or a boost. If you wish you can also help me with my filament costs.  Thank you.
