Description

*** AMS? Check out the two-color version of this model! ***

Infinity cube with strong hinges that won't break easily. This cube is designed with a lot of slack, so that it moves freely.

I designed this after having several fails with other models, where the hinges would break when trying to loosen them after printing. Hopefully, this design will print well for everyone!

These models and openscad source file can also be downloaded from https://github.com/jhpieper/sturdy-infinity-cube

Post-Printing

The hinges should bent quite easily after printing, with the hinges on the front and back side being more tight due to the orientation. Just work the cube a few times and everything should be quite loose.

Cube Sizes

It is best to not scale the model, as it messes with the spacing in the hinges.

Instead, check out these other models optimized for their size:

I used a cool rainbow pla that I found at micro center, though I think most companies sell (Bambu Labs sells). thanks again for the amazing toy!

Why the joint failed like this?

@codemania yikes! That shouldn't happen :/ It's hard to tell without more info, but I would guess either underextrusion or lack of cooling during the print. - What nozzle size are you using? - Do the cubes feel solid otherwise, or are they a bit squishy? Some hinges are printed floating "in air". This usually works really well, especially with the Bambu printers. First thing to try would be another PLA filament. You can also adjust extrusion / cooling parameters or print with supports.

I used 0.4 nozzle, and the cube is quite solid. I would try again some another day

Thanks -- I use a 0.4 nozzle as well. Let me know if it works better when you try again :)

I really like these. The overhangs don't print perfectly but that's probably a me thing as I'm only new to 3D printing and don't know what I'm doing. They are a little on the loose side but still really fun to play with, if they could be tightened up a little bit they would be pretty much perfect.

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I might try and make a tighter model, but some printers/materials result in stuck hinges even for the current model.
