Description

Mounting the external spool on the side for easier access, with added filament guide for smooth operation.

Parts

  • 2 x 608ZZ bearings
  • 1 x PC4-M10 Pneumatic Connector (optional, included filament arm for PTFE tubing for those without)
  • 1 x m3 x 14mm or 16mm for the top screw hole (start with the smaller one first as can bottom out and get stuck easily).
  • 2 x m3 x 18mm for the bottom screw holes.

Connector: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0966XQ4C4/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Choose either the 3mf file with the PC4-M10 fitting, or the one with PTFE passthrough.

Included 3mf file setup as follows:

  • 0.20 layer height @ 50% infil, I recommend PLA+
  • 4 walls
  • 4 top and bottom layers
  • Supports
  • Spool on 2nd build plate as I think the model looks better in 2 colours :)
  • Both filament arms included on build plate, remove the one you dont want.

Assembly

  1. Spend a few minutes carefully removing the supports from the inner slots
  2. Screw on the pneumatic connector to the filament guide and inert some bowden tubing. The PC4-M10s allow the tubing to pass through.
  3. Screw to side of case using the top back case screw hole and the 2 original screw holes.
  4. Slide on spool holder.
  5. Slide on filament arm.
  6. Detatch when not in use or leave as is.

Love the design, but filament get tangled. see photo. Perhaps the bearing makes the spool spin too fast. ill try add something to make the bearings spin less freely.

I'd not seen that before until someone on printables had a similar issue. I extended the arm for him and it seemed to solve the problem. I can attach the longer arm if useful? One tip, when inserting filament manually use the extrude buttons on the touchpad to grab the filament, that way it wont roll backwards on the bearings, which may cause this snag?

Check the STL section, uploaded a 15mm longer version of the arm which helped someone else. Let me know? Apols it was a quick change and I forgot to rotate so it is the correct way in the slicer, make sure to adjust! :)

Great print :) If you want something similar in size to replace that small coupler and is an actual Y splitter I have this too: https://makerworld.com/en/models/43773

Currently I don't have an AMS so the single coupling is ok. I have found an issue with the holder. I have a reel of Eryone pla and diameter is inside is smaller which makes it hit the arm. I have had to take some of the fitting peg away so the spool holder sits down a bit to help clear the arm.

Great model, a bit awkward with the new "Smoothy" Y splitter (and mount). I'd be open to help and look for an option to remix this into one with an integrated Smoothy mount.

I had the same situation, ended up doing some very funky grinding to make it all fit.

Great design, thanks for sharing! However, the "spool" unfortunately didn't print very well for me. Very rough and uneven surfaces in places of the support interfaces.

I know... not found a way to solve that without splitting the model in half

I find printing it 90 degrees standing with support work better let it lie down

The hole for the PTFE tube doesn't look the same as the image, and i'm not sure if I'll need to do post-processing to fit it correctly. Some supports are a bit annoying to get out Aside of that prints very well and hopefully works!

The image is a screen capture of the M10 fitting, so a slightly bigger threaded hole. The PTFE hole is sized so that just teh PTFE goes through without the need for any fitting.

I realize that as I was building it. It works very well and I'm super happy with it. Nice job!

The settings use a crazy amount of infill. Not sure if that much is really necessary... Other than that: Printed great. Supports were a bit of a struggle to remove. Printed in JAYO PLA+ Gray and DasFilament Matte Black.

I'm having issues with it using a second piece of PTFE tubing. I have a connector to connect both but it creates a lot of drag and it hard to slip through there. Have you had any issues?

Hello, quick question. I can't get the PTFE to push through the back of the PC4-M10 connector.Only through the front (the black ring side) I don't know much about these connectors but I ordered these: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B09YGVWG2Y/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Are these special PTFE connectors? Do others allow the 4mm PTFE to pass right through? Super confused, thanks for the help everyone.

I also bought some like that at first not realising there were differences. These are the same size but passthrough: https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07SKX5P9P/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Nice one. Next on my print list. Thank you. May i suggest 2 holes in the base of the spool holder so it can magnetically be stored on the back of the printer :)

just 2 x small 8mm holes in the bottom to insert magnets. then when you remove the holder you can put it on the back of the printer using the. magnets. i hope that makes sense?

I see, no problem. What depth are your 8mm magnets, 2mm? I’m away for a few days but will add the stl file once done
