Description

Planer Modular Storage System (PMSS) for French Cleat

Module: Planer Insert for Stanley No. 4 (Note: Side wall as separate download - see below)

I am proud to announce a modular system to store hand planers for woodworking onto a french cleat wall. Given the many different sizes and shapes, I created a set of standard modules which can be combined and additional parts for more planers added to the family.

The idea is to have a fixed set of 3 different types of side walls for 3 different planer size categories. Additionally there are center inserts which are custom to specific planes.

Here is the overview of modules available to date with direct links to the corresponding models. I also combined them all into one collection. You always need to print 1 set of side walls and 1 set of inserts, see the corresponding matches in the table below.

While originally I designed the parts for glueing, the final design can be entirely screwed. Depending on the planer width, all you need is 6x M3x20 (L) or M3x16 (M, L) bolts with hex flat heads and 6x nuts (links below). Fitting the nuts can be a bit tricky - make sure they are fully pressed in with the corner of the nut going first into the slot. Nut positions can be seen in the pictures below.

   .

Additionally, as this is intended to work as a system where you can add more modules over time, each module can be screwed to its neighboring module using 2x M5x20 hex bolts + 2 nuts (link below). As the assembly can be at bit tricky in that tight spot, for very small elements (like the Hongdui CR-MulTrim) it will be easier to use a longer M5x50 screws instead (and sandwich the module directly between its neighbors).

For Side Wall Size L I also provide additional distance spacers which can be mounted (glued) on the rear and pushes against the wall. If your cleat spacing is narrow enough so that the bottom of the wall touches another cleat, you don't need these spacers (e.g., on my example pictures you can see that I did not mount them).

The print profiles are a result of several trials to make them perfectly fit and avoiding warpage and shrinkage. At the same time I made them quite robust (5-6 walls for structural parts and/or selective strengthening) and designed them in a fail-safe way which should avoid that your precious planers are landing in the wrong spot. I recommend using the provided profiles unless you are a very experienced user.

Have fun building up a nice collection on your wall!
