Got this PM from @3dgirly out of the random. It has been several months since we had a run into. Kinda just came outa nowhere. She also was too scared to read my response so blocked me before I responded. I do admit my response was a little sassy but you got to understand it’s literally been 4+ months since we interacted last and I have steered clear of her and her… interesting makerworld behavors. Now, I do not want any of the fans of her to get mad at me here, this is just my interaction with her. @3dgirly if you see this, why?? If you are going to attack me and call me dumb out of the blue then don’t back off and block me before I respond. I would like to have a civialized convorsation about your apartent hatred of me and why you are relighting a camp fire that died 4 months ago. To any off you who would like to tag her so she can see this, thanks.(Edited)

3D Printing for the Kitchen: Is it Actually Safe?
3D printing has revolutionized the kitchen, from custom cookie cutters to ingenious bag clips and spice racks. On platforms like MakerWorld, "Kitchen" is consistently one of the most popular categories. However, the question remains: Just because you can print it, should you eat off it?
This guide explores the reality of food-safe 3D printing, the risks involved, and how to stay safe while enjoying your custom creations.
1. The Core Problem: Why "Safe" Filament Isn't Enough. Many filaments (like certain PLAs and PETGs) are marketed as "Food Safe" or "FDA Compliant." While the raw plastic might be fine, the 3D printing process introduces three major hazards:
• Bacterial Traps: FDM prints have tiny layer lines. These ridges are the perfect breeding ground for bacteria (like E. coli and Salmonella) that cannot be reached by a standard sponge or even a dishwasher.
• Toxic Additives: Even if the plastic is safe, the dyes and additives used to give filament its color may contain heavy metals.
• Nozzle Contamination: Most 3D printer nozzles are brass, which often contains trace amounts of lead. As the filament passes through, it can pick up these microscopic particles.
2. Risk Levels for Common Models
🟢 Low Risk (Dry or Single Use)
• Examples: Cookie cutters for a single batch of dough, dry pasta measurers, or citrus reamers used once and tossed.
• The Rule: If it touches food briefly and the food is then cooked (like cookie dough), the risk is minimal. However, treat these as disposable or hand-wash only.
🟡 Medium Risk (Indirect Contact)
• Examples: Bag clips, wine bottle toppers (if not touching the liquid), and spice rack organizers.
• The Rule: These are generally fine as they don't have prolonged contact with what you consume.
🔴 High Risk (Liquid or Repeated Use)
• Examples: Coffee mugs, bowls, spoons, and water bottles.
• The Rule: Avoid these unless you have performed post-processing. Liquids seep into layer lines and become impossible to sanitize.
3. Popular Food-Related Models on MakerWorld
You'll find thousands of kitchen-related models on MakerWorld. Here is how they generally stack up:
• Kitchen Organizers (Safe): K-Cup holders, drawer dividers, and spice racks. These are great because they never actually touch the food you eat.
• Kitchen Gadgets (Moderate Risk): Bag squeezers, garlic presses, or citrus juicers. These should be washed immediately after use and inspected for wear.
• Baking Tools (Moderate Risk): Custom-shaped cookie cutters. These are very popular, but it is best to use them for a single session and then discard them or use them for non-food crafts like clay.
• Dining Utensils (High Risk): Chopstick helpers, bowls, or spoons. These require a food-safe sealant to be used repeatedly.
4. How to Make Your Prints Truly Food-Safe
If you are determined to print a functional bowl or utensil, you must bridge the "layer line gap":
1. Use a Food-Grade Coating: The gold standard is a food-safe, FDA-compliant epoxy resin. Coating your print in a smooth layer seals the pores and creates a surface that can be sanitized.
2. Switch to Stainless Steel: Replace your brass nozzle with a hardened stainless steel nozzle to avoid lead contamination.
3. Choose the Right Material: PETG is naturally more chemically and heat-resistant than PLA, making it a better choice for kitchen environments.
Summary Checklist for Makers
• Don't put prints in the dishwasher. The heat will warp most prints, and it won't kill the bacteria hiding in the layers.
• Check the SDS. Read the Safety Data Sheet for your filament brand to check for lead or heavy metal additives.
• Seal it up. When in doubt, use a food-safe epoxy coating.
The Maker community thrives on utility. By understanding the science of food safety, you can keep your kitchen organized and your family safe!

Thank you, @MakerWorld ! I was saving up for my third gift card, and now I actually have enough for two! This is really meaningful to me, and I look forward to the years to come as I grow as a designer and community member. I hope you and @BambuLab open a store on the East Coast soon—although my wallet might not be happy about it! 🤣 I can't wait to put an order together once the gift cards are back in stock. Keep beating Creality! 😉(Edited)

The fact of the matter is that Creality, even while producing devices strikingly similar to those from competitors like Bambu Lab, continues to rely on its own independent design and development teams. This phenomenon isn't new; it's the standard practice of innovation across all industries. Consider the music world, where countless songs share similar structures, melodies, and instrumentation, yet are fundamentally considered original compositions.
Creality is not an inherently "bad" printer brand. For a significant period, they were the undisputed industry leader, democratizing 3D printing and becoming the gateway for millions of users. As of early 2024, Creality's sales volume reached over 5.5 million FDM 3D printers globally, compared to Bambu Lab's estimated sales of around 400,000 units since their market entry. This historical volume underscores Creality's massive influence and market penetration.
Creality's current poor reputation often overshadows its immense contributions. Frankly, if it wasn't for Creality's early affordability and accessibility, the 3D printing enthusiast community, and the industry itself, would be far smaller today.
The Competition for Multi-Material Printing
While Creality's recent product launches may appear to be directly mimicking Bambu Lab's innovations, the pursuit of multi-material printing is a normal and necessary competitive evolution for the entire market. For instance, Prusa Research, long before Bambu Lab, developed the Automatic material system (AMS) and now uses a Tool Changer design in its high-end printers. Creality is actively competing with its own system, the Creality Filament System (CFS), designed to offer multi-color/multi-material printing on its newest CoreXY machines like the K series. Furthermore, other major brands, like Anycubic (with the ACE system) and Flashforge, are also rapidly releasing their own iterations of these automated material management systems. One company innovates something, and another tweaks it and calls it their own—that is the very nature of a healthy market. Bambu Lab needs competition to keep the entire 3D printing sector moving forward and benefiting all consumers.

Very intesting, and scary
Hey MakerWorld community! I'm a nobody around these parts, but I do have some #Safety concerns that I'd like to talk about and ask for y'all's feedback on.
I own a small manufacturing business that's powered by a bunch of BL A1s. I'm thinking of adding my first TPU products to my catalog, but first I wanted to do some safety research before potentially printing something toxic on an unenclosed bed.
I decided to use Gemini 2.5 Pro's Deep Research feature to get a science-based toxicological breakdown of PLA, PETG, and TPU. I was absolutely shocked by the results of recent studies, which you can see a brief overview of in the attached image. You can also view the entire report and sources here: https://g.co/gemini/share/c62274c2060e
My main concern is PLA. PLA has been marketed as old reliable; the "safe" and "time-tested" filament. Consider my surprise when I learned that controlled chamber studies measured ultrafine particle emissions to be in the range of 10^9 through 10^11 particles per minute. This INSANE amount of UFPs is more than enough to cause significant reductions in cellular viability and induction of oxidative stress. Even more concerning is the seemingly unambiguous evidence that exposure to PLA UFP emissions seems to cause significant increases in a molecular marker (gamma-H2AX) that indicates the most severe form of DNA damage.
I don't believe everything that I read, but this definitely concerns me. I've been printing a ton of unenclosed PLA for almost two years now, and my health has been declining since I started 3D printing (although I had believed it to be just a natural effect of aging and working too much). Now I'm extremely concerned that we've all been putting ourselves at risk due to incorrect safety claims.
What do y'all make of this? Is Gemini just tripping over less-than-reputable studies? Or is this something that the community needs to take seriously?

What do you think about this: When you upload a community post i often find that when you tag people you get way more enagment and replies not just becuase those people replie but because the more comments and views a post has the more chamce it is to show up on someones page. This isnt always true as i see many posts with 0-1 comments but i find that when i post an article and tag someone i get way more replies than not. What do you think. @3DRIO @GWDesigns @Rando101 @Emaster im sure you guys prob know what ik talking about.
