I designed an unusual variant of cycloidal gearbox that uses steel balls. The gearbox has output ratio of 11:1 and is really compact. It fits right on top of NEMA17 stepper motor. The height of the gearbox case is 21mm, and total height, with output shaft, is 30mm. The gearbox is backdrivable. Check out the project to see more details!
