Interlocking land and river model work update!
District of Columbia (DC) is one of my test cases because it is a relatively small map that I can debug manually. The interlocking dual object mesh is animated below (click to see the animation). Notable features:
1. Smooth borders that are no longer staircased at rough pixel boundaries.
2. Seamless height transitions between the 2 colors
3. Manifold geometry. You're just gonna need to trust me on that, I swear it is.
There is a lot of control (and pitfalls) when creating multiple interlocking geometries with the newly developed method and it is lighter on memory + faster compared to brute force boolean operations.

Map improvements continue - Work in progress on smoother map model borders that fit the actual geographic boundaries.
Screenshot (click to view full). No 3D mesh preview for you guys yet.
The diagonal triangle represents a real geographic boundary transformed into real printing coordinates and the square is a "cell", the previous map border's best detail available.
We are usually limited in border resolution by keeping/deleting an entire cell.
I'm working on future map models that fit geographic boundary curves. Smooth borders reduce stair stepping = better quality + interlocking maps.

That feeling when the mesh algorithm you are working on generates seamless interlocking models. (click image to see animated demo)
The improved algorithm for generating map features is faster than my previous method with 1/100 of the memory usage. The result of over 2 years of collaboration leading to improved + new maps in less time ⏱, with massive energy savings🍃 (in electricity I mean — not our free time 🥲).

Add elevation contour lines to your 3D map models!
You can add elevation contour lines and color changes to your 3D printed maps with a new script that I created. The Map Feature Modifier (MFM) script is compatible with Prusaslicer, OrcaSlicer, and Bambu Studio. It is also open source and free to use! Download it here.Elevation Contour LinesElevations contour lines (also known as isolines) show a path of constant elevation on a height map.Symbology Elevation ScaleUsually height on a map is colored along a scale as seen below.ESRIBringing Cartographic Map Features to 3D PrintingNow you can add both of these features into a 3D printed map with the free Map Feature Modifier! It is optimized for use with my free 3D printable maps. It even works on models that are not maps so you can add layered color changes in creative ways to other objects.I made a tutorial video showing how to use the Map Feature Modifier. All of the steps are also written to follow at your own pace on the GitHub repo. Normally I would write the content of the video in a post but I just started a new job and don’t have a lot of time lately so the video and Github repo documentation will need to suffice for now.How it worksI go into more depth on how the script works in the internals portion at the end of the MFM tutorial youtube video. I’ve written a short quick explanation below. Initially I tried simply replacing the T tool indices on spaced out layers to create the isolines but that leads to an oil slick effect when the top surface coincides with an isoline layer.Instead of being layer aware, I needed to increase of the granularity of the script to be feature aware. Each printing feature is tracked so that only the outer walls (or other user selected feature type) is recolored to create isolines. The order of the printing features must also be altered to print all the outer walls at once before switching to print the inner walls or other features so that toolchanges and color swaps are kept to a minimum. The existing toolchange and prime tower movements are also reused on demand so that new toolchanges will use the prime tower and toolchange to avoid wasted material and time from flushing. Map Feature Modifier ended up becoming a framework that can extract and reorder G-code into relocatable and modifiable G-code segments akin to assembly gadgets. It can run either within a slicer as a post processing script, a command line program, or a GUI app. I also added the feature for the GUI app to handle Plate Sliced 3MF which is sliced G-code that is compressed into a 3MF which is more friendly for normal users to import and preview the processed 3MF in the slicer.ThanksA big thank you the below individuals as well as the 3D printing community.Chris Harding for his work on TouchTerrain and letting me contribute to the project.Brian Kelley from Colorado for kickstarting my initial work on Map Feature Modifier.Joseph Sanzo and Khor Hon Wei for trusting me with their 3D printers as guinea pigs.Toybox Labs for filament to test.

“Map to my heart” model for my husband for Valentine’s Day. Location of our first date back in 2013. ❤️
Original model: https://makerworld.com/en/models/955029#profileId-923786
This was a great project that helped me learn a bit more about working with Bambu Studio and making modifications to models for best results.

Dynamically applying multiple color changes to sliced G-code through a Post Processing script.I made this add elevation contour lines and high snow color to my 3D printed maps and you can use it now, too! The script is available at https://github.com/ansonl/mfm and all of my free 3D maps on MakerWorld can be used with this script.
More info on the maps can be found at https://ansonliu.com/maps/
The demo video below is a dual color dice model that has a green isoline added at repeating heights only on the wall features and not in the infill. The pink base color is swapped for a tan color near the top. This required rearranging G-code on the go to optimized printing "islands" on each layer. The prime tower is also smartly reused during actual toolchanges. #Reduce Wast in multiple colors #maps #ams #postprocessing #script
