Description

LightSpool [BETA VERSION!]

Many filament manufacturers use cardboard-based filament, which is affordable but often causes problems with the AMS. I sought a solution after trying several ring solutions and others, but they either introduced new issues or didn't work well.

So, I decided to design my own adapter. The primary objective was to repurpose the original filament spool and make an adapter that's as light as possible (all parts weigh close to 100 grams). It's a modular system, meaning you can use the spool plates with different adapters for various cardboard spools in the future. I plan to expand the range of adapters once this design proves successful.

Benefits:

  • Direct usage of cardboard spools without filament transfer
  • Weighs under 100g of filament, no material waste
  • Modular and re-usable, requiring only the adapter to be swapped for compatibility with various manufacturers
  • Features rounded corners to minimize friction on the AMS active support shaft
  • Intelligent, leightweight design while still robust

Please note that this product is currently in its beta testing phase. This means it may still be undergoing final testing and adjustments before its final release. You are kindly advised to be aware that, during this beta phase, the product may not function as intended and might experience occasional issues or bugs. I greatly appreciate any feedback or suggestions to help me improve the product. Please use this beta product with the understanding that it is still a work in progress and may not yet offer the full features and stability of a final release.

The eSUN adapter provided was made using an eSUN PLA+ spool. (82.5 mm diameter, 56 mm spool height)

The JAYO adapter provided was made using a JAYO PLA spool. (76.6 mm diameter, 53.5 mm spool height)

Brief Guide:

  1. Gently remove one side of the cardboard, specifically the side opposite to where the filament begins.
  2. Put together the inner part of the print, attach one spool plate to the top and place it inside the cardboard spool.
    1. The design of the adapter ensures a tight fit, requiring some force by design.
    2. Insert it at an angle, straighten it, and then gently use your fist to apply some force.
  3. Guide the filament's starting end to the newly assembled spool plate, ensure it is never in a loose position.
  4. Take off the cardboard on the other side.
  5. Put together and attach the final spool plate you printed.

Assembly guide with photos will follow in the future.

Change log:

06.01.2024

  • The spacers have been redesigned to be more flexible, accommodating variations in printing or cardboard spool manufacturing tolerances.

24.12.2023

  • Revised the design of the pipe and adapters; now, only the adapters require reprinting for compatibility with spools from different manufacturers, while the pipe remains constant.
  • Enhanced the strength of the spool plate with an optimized hexagonal structure.
  • Added JAYO adapter

Just a suggestion, but I have used a spool system in the past that added angled holes around the edges which reduced the stress on the filament quite a bit. Also, would you possibly be open to adding the F3D file for the adapter part? This would potentially allow for the community to edit and add adapters based on their own spool dimensions of different brands. Thanks!

Would appreciate the native file too. I could imagine creating a parametric design for the adaptor, that you just need to enter the ID of the Cardboard spool to generate the corresponding adaptor

I'll give the angled filament holes a try. I'm happy to share the adapter F3D file, but I'd like to refine it further since I'm still receiving suggestions for optimization.

I have added a version with angled filament holes (Spool plate - angled filament holes (beta).stl). It printed great, I also tested it briefly. But would need to do more tests in order to replace the current version.

eSUN adapter
Passt in die E-Sun Karton Spule.. Allerdings wäre es noch besser wenn die 3 Nasen im oberen Bereich etwas angefast und etwas stabiler ausgeführt wären. Dann könnte man die leichter in die Karton Rolle einpressen!

Hallo!

Kappt super!
