Description

My Fly Fishing Rod Vault box design. I have set this up to be a universal fully printable rod box for the roof of your car.

This has been tested on my truck (similar mounting) for around 10k miles so far with zero issues.

I use a long bolt and lock nut for the hinge, and a quick pin / lock for the latching piece.

Purchase lengths of black ABS Schedule 40 pipe at home depot and some ubolts that will fit the length of your roof rack bars.

Please leave a message if you need help with this, alot of time and effort has been put into it.

First off, thank you @DeadHead for the awesome design!! I printed this in ASA and made a few modifications. I redesigned the mounts for my Hooke Road rack, added a divider, added material and a 45 deg angle to the hinges and locking points to reduce supports and flattened and shortened the back half since I don't have rods with fighting butts...yet. shortening the back half also reduced print time and material usage. I am also in the process of redesigning the mounts as a 2 piece rather than the one piece. I may also rotate the carrier so that it is reels up rather than down.

I would love to see this with Aluminum tubes. Can I ask where you are getting the aluminum tubes?

Printed perfect. Made a “shorty” style rod vault to transport my rods broken down in half inside my Jeep. Works great!

I used 10’ sticks of pvc painted black. Cut them down to about 5’4” because that’s what my truck bed is. the rods I had at the time were 9’ 2 piece rods, so I just broke em down.

Mounted it a couple weeks ago and it’s been great on the two trips I’ve been on since! Great model! I bought Trxstle brand rod covers for when they’re in the vault for anyone else that prints this - easier solution than putting foam in the pipes.

Let me start to say that your design was an inspiration. I needed a 4-rod holder because I often fish with my wife, and we each take 2 rods, or more if we have more than 2 people. I spent weeks working and printing them. I'm filly fishined. Even though the pictures show 9.5-foot-long tubes. I decided to go with 6 feet long instead. The reason is that I want to use it on my wife's 4Runner. The 4Runner has a couple of limitations: 1. The TRD roof rack is short, and the cargo door opens upward. So the long tubes bed a lot. Soon, I'll upload it the design for anything that is interested. Any feedback will be welcome. A couple of things. All the parts can be printed without any supports. All printed in ASA. The front part of the box has to be put together with screws and I also glue it with ASA slurry. All printable in 300x300 bed

This thing rocks. Printed in PLA+ I never have seen a smaller rod holder for rods in half and I hate the Pinocchio look of the long ones. This fits my rod in 2 pieces perfectly. A mount with a single hole in the center would be my preferred way to mount. These brackets work pretty well but time will tell. Painted for UV protection. It doesn’t get that hot here in Colorado so pla+ should have okay heat resistance. If not I’ll print again in PETG
