Description

This is a nice way to enhance your home heating by increasing the airflow of the radiator.

Available for different radiator sizes (85-90-95mm top depth). For a full radiator coverage and maximum performace you can adapt it to your radiator length as well, just print as many segments as you wish. For the end-closing pieces I provided the step-models so you can adjust to your specific size/length with the offset face feature in Fusion360. All parts print support-free.

 

The fans will turn on and off automatically, thanks to the small thermostat switch, which you can stick to the radiator body with a magnet.

The fan inserts are a separate part, this way you can rotate them for the optimal hot airflow direction.

 

What you will need: 

  • 12V AC-DC power adapter with DC plug (if you want to decrease the fan speed and make it quieter, you can choose an adapter, where the voltage can be set between 6V, 9V, etc.)
  • 2,1x5,5mm DC-plug with cable-ends, female

  • Thermostat switch, 35C, normally open

  • 6mm or 8mm neodym magnet, glue it to the thermostat for optimal temperature sensing
  • Wago 2-way connectors - 3 pcs
  • Wago 3-way connectors - 2 pcs/fans
  • Arctic P8 or P8 Silent fans
  • M3 heat inserts
  • M3x10 or 12mm screws
  • some cables

For connecting the cables and assembling please refer to the attached photos. If you have difficulties with the wiring, just send me a note and I will do my best to help you.

I will upload a different design in one or two days, where the fans are placed under the radiator and blow upwards. Perhaps you could try that as well

I compared the difference in noise levels when the fans blow downwards versus upwards I anticipated the result when air passes through the radiator, the fins create a louder sound They are considerably quieter when blowing upwards Tested with a variable 12V 3A power supply set to 6V using four fans

A design secured magnetically beneath the radiator was also a consideration, however, it would require numerous magnets or exceptionally strong ones, given the considerable weight of the bar. I haven't yet attempted this, but even so, I would incline towards directing the fans away from the radiator to mitigate noise levels

Would it be possible to have an updated design with increased angle on the fan mounts so they are blowing at a 90 degree angle straight into the room? My problem is all the heat from the radiator rising upstairs and not heating the room it is in! Currently giving Fusion 360 a first attempt, rather unsuccessfully. Love the design, very well thought out!

Great design, i have a 2m long radiator to cover, and would like to add some more space in between the fans. Any chance you can add a closed ( spacer ) sizable mid piece?

Sure, I just added 150mm cover extenders for each size (85-90-95mm).

I would print it in PETG at the very least I once made towel holders for a heater in PLA, and they warped after a short time

If your water temperature in the pipes is below 55°C, you can print them from PLA without any issues Two of mine are also made from PLA

Okay, thanks for the feedback. Below 50-55 degrees Celsius, PLA is fine; for warmer radiators, PETG is recommended :)

Are those fans blowing or sucking?

Mine are blowing towards the room, but its possible to flip them, so they blow to the bottom.

I see, that is good if you let them blow down, that would be against the flow of the warm air. In my opinion I think it would be best if you would place them on the bottom of the radiator blowing up into the room, that way the motors and plastic stays as cool as possible because they suck only cold air thru them and you keep the airflow direction you have now. But I also like that you can direct the flow on top.

Yep, true. My original goal was to direct the top airflow at an angle to compensate for furnitures in front of the radiator (see my pictures). For that, top mount is ideal and convenient.
