Yes, this is yet another reusable Bambu filament spool!
But hang on, I was missing some features in other spools, especially in the filament holding department.
So I still designed my own…
See, most spools have holes in the sides to pull the filament through to prevent it from unspooling and tangling. This has to do with injection molding where it is hard to create an alternative hole orientation.
But this is 3D printing! We can do what we want! That's why I integrated the filament pass-through in the wall of the spool, making it easy to store spools next to each other or even stacking them, without the fear of breaking the filament tip and untangling the spool anyway!
The spool center also has a single wall, since the double walled designs are only needed for (again) injection molding. The inner ring is still thick enough to fit comfortably on the AMS lite. I believe the spool is also AMS compatible, but please let me know since I don't own one.
Thirdly, I find the ‘grams’ indication on the sticker too minimal. Therefore I integrated the weight of the empty spool including cardboard in text on the inside. This is ~175 grams for the standard spool and ~160grams for the mini version. Just weigh your spool and subtract.
Oh, and I was also not feeling the hexagons and circles, but that is just a matter of taste!
I did add a 179mm version for the A1 mini, it should be big enough but make sure the spool is always under tension when full because the filament might otherwise get sidetracked besides the spool. The other two print profiles are the quick and definitely dirty (still works the same though), and a higher quality one.
V2 changes:
- Users were wanting to use this spool for spooling their own filament, so the base is now flat and there are two alternative holes to hold on the start of the filament.
- The spool now locks even without having a refill spool in between the halves, V1 falls apart (but does work with a refill)
- The lock is slightly firmer. The first time you might need some force for the snap. When the pattern is aligned on both sides, it is in the locked position
- Added an AMS friendly version with a thick, continuous perimeter
V3 changes:
- Some users had V2 not locking firmly and others had V2 locking too firm. I believe this is due to Bambu's Flow Rate Calibration which sometimes overcompensates and sometimes undercompensates. Therefore V3 has a spring loaded locking mechanism.
- The label was not accurately placed to force myself to weigh spools instead of trust the label. I now placed the label in the correct position.
Make sure to lock them together correctly! (see images)
Happy printing!
