Description

Backstory

There are plenty of shelves and racks for filament addicts like me, but I couldn't find a hanging solution that allowed the spools to move.

Why did it need to move? I have space above my workbench where I wanted to store my filaments. But since it's high and deep, accessing filaments in the back would be difficult. So, I came up with this sliding track which allows the filaments to be rotated.

And why hangers vs another solution? My first prototype was a guardrail, that failed due to friction and bunching.

This is what it looked like:

For my next prototype, I took inspiration from dry cleaners. They use a conveyor track with clothing on hangers, maintaining uniform spacing to prevent bunching around curves.

What About Humidity?

You’ll need to live in a dry climate. I live in Colorado and haven't had issues storing my filament this way.

Perhaps someone already has a solution for dehumidifying a storage space.

Explanation of Parts

  • Hanger: Flexible to fit different spool widths.
  • Spacer with handle: Use the handle to slide filaments along.
  • Spacer without handle: Saves printing filament since not every space needs a handle.

Print Materials

  • Hanger: Use PETG to avoid deformation over time (PLA is not recommended).
  • Spacers: PLA or PETG works fine since they’re not load-bearing long-term.

Misc Notes

  • Print enough hangers and spacers to fill the curtain rail 100%, creating a continuous loop. If you don’t have enough spools, just leave hangers empty.
  • You’ll need a curtain rail and rollers. I used this one. The spacers and hangers are designed to fit these rollers.
