Description

Did you know, most hamster wheels available commercially are unsuitable for hamsters?

a) they are generally too small - hamsters benefit from much bigger wheels.

b) they normally have a solid central axle that in the event of a mis-footing can see the hamster break its back.

c) hamsters can cover several miles in a night, most of these wheels use friction bearings that wear out and worse can fail, leading to injury.

Here is my new improved Hamster Wheel!

There are two versions:

One you print in vase mode - that is not as strong but is super light and is actually fine for most hamsters. I do not have a 0.6/0.8mm nozzle so can only just about manage 0.8mm walls on my 0.4mm nozzle. With a 0.6 or 0.8 you could potentially increase the wall thickness to 1.2mm or 1.6mm. To print this one you need to print both the wheel and the hubs / centre (in a seperate profile as BS only allow vase to be a global setting.)

The 2nd is a normally sliced version - this is harder to print with more than a single colour, but with 1.2mm walls this one is solid enough even for a rat. (would probably need 12" not 9" for a rat though!)

The only hardware you need are 2x 608 bearings for the hubs and the axle is an M8 stage / shoulder bolt. In my orginal design (Silent Hamster Wheel by sirfragalot - MakerWorld) I printed the axle bolt - and to be fair to it, it lasted about 8 months…and our hamster was on it ALL night EVERY night!

SPIRAL MODE - Wheel Only
I already had a home made hamster wheel without bearing that was loud and this wheel fixed everything! I did it in vase mode using a .6mm nozzle and was able to do a 1.2 mm wall like the designer said, so I upload my print profile! I used ABS and wow I'm planning on doing a base to replace my PCV one

SPIRAL MODE - Wheel Only
printed out beautifully, and i hope it will hold the hampster as it's spinning - the vase mode made it really thin.

should be fine, the default profile is 0.8mm walls. If your hamster is on the larger size then try 0.6mm nozzle with 1.2mm wall or 0.8mm with 1.6.mm walls.

Did you print in PETG ou PLA ? Is there a way to suspend on a full case ? I don't have bars in the cage

I printed in PLA and had no issues. for a cage with no bars, you could drill an 8mm hole, put the axle bolt through and secure with a nut on the outside.

Replying to @sirfragalot :
Can you make centres for M6 instead M8 ? Because i have already M6 screw :D

608 bearings wouldn't work with that configuration I'm afraid. If you can find a bearing with the same O/D as a 608 but an I/D of 6mm then no changes would be needed to the design.

Is there a stand you recommend or have used which is 3d printed? I have a glass enclosure so I don't have anything to mount it to.

Could you tell me the diameter of the wheel?

Hello, is a small 6-inch model available

no but you could scale the wheel and add a negative cylinder to maintain the same centre bore

The model looks amazing and is very well thought. Thanks! Is there any way to make this a bit smaller, but still use bearings? Maybe down to 8". I'm not sure if scaling only the wheel down in XY would work, or if the axle would no longer fit correctly.

NOT VASE MODE. Print for more solid wheel.
Our hamster loves it. Tried the vase mode version but it split during install. Sturdier version works great though!

Thanks for the positive feedback, glad your hamster loves it too! Out of interest what line width did you use on the vase mode one!
