Description

🧩 Corsair Air 540 & Universal Modular SSD Enclosure System

📌 Summary

The Corsair Air 540 case has been discontinued, making OEM SSD rack modules increasingly difficult to replace or source.

This modular SSD enclosure system was designed as a direct replacement and expansion solution for the original Corsair SSD mounting system. It also addresses Corsair Part Number CC-8930156 (Air 540 SSD Cage Base with 4x SSD Tray), providing a functional replacement and upgrade path for users who have lost, damaged, or need additional SSD mounting capacity beyond the factory configuration.

The system integrates directly with the original Corsair SSD adapter while also providing a universal mounting solution for virtually any computer case. No permanent modification is required when using the original Corsair hardware.

💾 Drive Compatibility

Supports standard 2.5-inch SATA SSDs and HDDs with drive thicknesses ranging from:

  • 5 mm
  • 6.5 mm
  • 7 mm
  • 9.5 mm
  • Up to 10 mm

🧱 System Overview

The Corsair Air 540 & Universal Modular SSD Enclosure System consists of three modular components designed to work together. Whether you still have the original Corsair SSD mounting hardware or have completely lost it, this system provides a flexible, expandable, and professional storage solution.

All components are precision designed with a zero-tolerance friction fit, allowing users to build a secure modular storage system while preserving the option for additional mechanical reinforcement if desired.

🔹 Corsair Base Enclosure

The Corsair Base Enclosure attaches directly to the original Corsair SSD adapter that clips into the Air 540 chassis.

Features

  • Utilizes the original Corsair SSD adapter
  • Precision zero-tolerance friction fit
  • No permanent case modifications required
  • Optional reinforcement using a 7/64-inch drill bit and standard M3x8 screws

The tolerances are intentionally very tight, creating a secure interference fit that normally requires no additional hardware.

For users who transport their system frequently or prefer maximum rigidity, the mounting tabs may be drilled and secured using M3x8 computer screws. This reinforcement is optional and not required for normal use.

🔹 Corsair Universal Mount Base

The Corsair Universal Mount Base is designed for users who no longer have the original Corsair SSD mounting hardware or who wish to install the modular enclosure system into virtually any computer case.

The Universal Mount Base incorporates four 5 mm fan-style mounting holes, providing multiple installation methods.

Depending on your computer case, you may:

  • Mount it directly in the original SSD mounting location of the Corsair Air 540, utilizing the existing hex grid where the original SSD mounting assembly was installed, often eliminating the need for drilling altogether.
  • Drill four mounting holes into virtually any PC case where adequate space is available.
  • Use the hexagonal ventilation grid commonly found on many modern computer cases by aligning the mounting holes with the existing hex pattern, eliminating the need for drilling in many installations.

This allows the modular storage system to be installed in:

  • Corsair Air 540
  • Full Tower cases
  • Mid Tower cases
  • Micro-ATX cases
  • Mini-ITX cases
  • Open-air test benches
  • Custom-built computer enclosures
  • Server chassis

The Corsair Universal Mount Base is especially valuable for users who have completely lost all original Corsair SSD mounting modules. Once installed, it accepts the same Corsair Step Enclosures as the Corsair Base Enclosure, making both mounting methods fully interchangeable.

🔹 Corsair Step Enclosure

The Corsair Step Enclosure is the modular expansion component used with either base enclosure.

Each Step Enclosure inserts into either the Corsair Base Enclosure or the Corsair Universal Mount Base using a precision zero-tolerance friction fit.

Because of the intentionally tight interference fit, the modules are designed to remain assembled once installed and may be difficult to separate without tools.

Users may stack as many Step Enclosures as needed to accommodate additional drives. As the stack height increases, lateral load on the assembly also increases. For larger storage configurations, it is recommended to reinforce each connection using standard M3 computer screws to improve structural rigidity and long-term durability.

✔ Supported Configurations

Configuration 1 — Original Corsair Mounting Hardware

  • Original Corsair SSD Adapter
  • Corsair Base Enclosure
  • One or more Corsair Step Enclosures

Configuration 2 — Universal Installation

  • Corsair Universal Mount Base
  • One or more Corsair Step Enclosures

Both configurations use the same Step Enclosures, ensuring full compatibility and interchangeability across all mounting methods.

🖨️ 3D Printing Recommendations

For best results, use heat-resistant and mechanically stable filaments such as:

  • PETG
  • ABS
  • ASA
  • Or similar engineering-grade materials

Recommended Print Settings

  • Layer Height: 0.20 mm
  • Infill: 15% minimum
  • Supports: Required for all insert and tab features
  • Print Orientation: Tabs & screw holes facing upward

These settings provide optimal strength, dimensional accuracy, and long-term durability.

🔧 Modifications & Community Use
