Description

This enclosure was designed specifically for the combination of a Raspberry Pi 5 and the Pineboards AI Bundle (Hailo-8L + NVMe SSD adapter) under heavy load, with an active fan on both sides. I created this model because I could not find any existing enclosure — neither commercial nor printable — that properly addressed the mechanical and thermal challenges of this board combination with respect to the housing of two fans.

The stacked (“piggyback”) construction of the boards creates several problems:

  • insufficient airflow around the SSD
  • no proper fan mounting options
  • problematic mounting geometry
  • thermal issues under sustained AI workloads

In my setup, the NVMe SSD overheated under high load. This enclosure was designed to solve these issues cleanly.

Features

  • optimized spacing between Raspberry Pi 5 and Pineboards AI Bundle
  • controlled clearance to floor and side walls for airflow
  • dedicated fan mounting position
  • improved ventilation around the NVMe SSD
  • proper cable clearance
  • mechanically stable mounting
  • easy assembly and maintenance access
  • designed specifically for active cooling scenarios

The model was tested with sustained high-load AI workloads where SSD temperatures previously became problematic.

Hardware

Designed for:

  • Raspberry Pi 5
  • Pineboards AI Bundle (Hailo-8L accelerator & NVMe 2280 SSD)

Notes

I recommend active airflow for sustained AI inference workloads, especially when using fast NVMe SSDs.

STEP/source files are included so the enclosure can be modified for different fans (I'm using a standard Raspberry Pi Cooling Fan 30x30x7mm and heatsinks on the SSD).
