I'm an ADHD husband, father of 5, QA engineer, market vendor, & self-taught designer.
Thank you for backing my family of 7 & honoring the thousands of hours I've poured into this! 🖤
I STRONGLY ADVISE YOU TO NOT glue the screw to the base. I have spent many hours trying to identify the cause, but for some reason the occasional cockpit cannot be pushed down anymore. Unscrew & rescrewing into the base resolves the issue, immediately. If you have any insight, feel free to share. But it does not seem to be the thread or wear, since unscrewing/rescrewing resolves the issue. This is a really fun model I worked very hard on. So please keep this in mind.
[ASSEMBLY GUIDE]
UPDATE 1
- Added several more profiles (to hopefully help those who use Bambu Handy, with tolerances)
- Changed all profiles to 3 walls + 12% infill (more heft results in a longer/better spin)
- Added option to print without bottom “phazers”
- To be blunt, it spins better without them & you hardly see them (though I love the appearance)
- I am currently playing with a 75% size options (will likely require tolerance adjustments)
UPDATE 2
- Added profile for even LOOSER screw & pegs
- The reality is that not all printers/filaments perform identically
- Please, be patient & recognize that I have done my best to give you several options to address this
- I will always do my best to help, if you leave a thoughtful comment
- Added video assembly guide
UPDATE 3
- Beveled the base of the cockpit (to reduce resistance against filaments like Silk PLA)
- (I would still encourage you to not use Silk PLA for the screw or cockpit, even for the sake of durability)
- Removed “Phaser” options
- (Spins longer without them & you barely get to see them)
- Consolidated to 3 profiles
Reduced pegs to 100% size (from 103%)
[PLEASE note that abrasive filaments experience greater friction. Glow filament is abrasive. If you want to make the cockpit & or screw using glow filament, be sure to use a lubricant of some sort. I use silicone lubricant.]
What a blast this was to make! I iterated on the spinning mechanism, many times, over the last ~month.
Assembly (I will add images or a gif, later):
Screw into cockpit (largest diameter at the top) > screw into base > add pegs to base > align pegs & press top/base together
Notes
- Prints in 4 parts + 3 connectors/pegs
- Consider adding glue (BUT ONLY FOR THE PEGS)
- I've made the cockpit spin “freely” when it reaches it's lowest point
- A little more forgiving for kids to spin it
- Adds fun ways to spin it in different ways
- Getting the cockpit to go back up requires a light spin to get it going (since it floats freely, at the lowest)
- Painting isn't really necessary, go to object view & you can change colors of almost everything! 🖤🦊
Ask questions. Be kind. I want to improve. Thank you. 🙏
