Description

The IKEA KALLAX is a staple of home organization, but open shelving often means putting clutter on display. I wanted a solution that adds privacy, customization, and personality without permanently modifying the furniture.

The KALLAX Door System is a hardware-free modular facade system that transforms standard shelving into a customizable home gallery. Instead of a static piece of furniture, your shelf becomes a rotating exhibit with interchangeable infill panels ranging from computational geometric patterns and botanical screens to functional pegboards.

The door frame is engineered specifically for digital fabrication and uses precision dovetail joints that allow the infill panels to slide securely into place without glue or fasteners. The system is compatible with both 3D printing and laser cutting, making it easy to create your own custom panel designs from a variety of materials.

Designed to fit directly between the KALLAX shelf unit and cabinet insert, the entire system installs without screws, drilling, or additional hardware.

Works only with the KALLAX shelf insert.

Design Features

  • Precision Dovetail Interlock: The infill panels slide securely into the frame using integrated dovetail joints, creating a flush and sturdy connection without adhesives or extra hardware.

  • Hybrid Digital Fabrication: Designed for both 3d printing and laser cutting. The 2D infill panels can be easily laser-cut from materials like plywood or acrylic for a premium, multi-material aesthetic.

  • Integrated Skådis Pegboard: The wavy infill panel features standard IKEA Skådis slots, allowing you to mount your favorite hooks, containers, and accessories directly onto the door.

  • Print-in-Place Hinges: Engineered for smooth movement directly off the build plate with no hinge pins or additional assembly required.

  • Zero-Hardware Installation: Designed to friction-fit perfectly between your existing Kallax cabinet and the shelf insert. No screws, no drilling, and no tools required.

  • Optional Magnetic Closure: The handle features a built-in slot to easily drop in a magnet, giving the doors a satisfying, secure snap when closed together.

  • Fully Customizable: A laser cutting template and an infill cutter are included so you can create your own custom panel designs. Additional panel patterns will be released soon.

Printing and Installation notes

  •  If the hinge is stuck after printing, slowly close and open it until it breaks free.
(Optional) If using the magnetic closure, insert magnets (D5 x 2 mm) into the designated handle slots and ensure the polarities match correctly.
Slide the infill panel into the frame using the integrated dovetail joints until fully seated.
The infill panel is not square. If it does not fit initially, rotate it 90 degrees and try again.
  • Gently wedge the completed door assembly between the shelf side and the cabinet wall.
  • Adjust the shelf insert depth until the door is flush with the cabinet.
  • NEW: For the double height frame, print each plate inside the profile twice. Assemble the handle in the middle after installing the door.
