RETRO CONSOLE WOOD TEXTURE

I had an old phone with a broken screen and instead of throwing it away, I decided to give it a second life. The idea was simple: transform unused hardware into a functional retro gaming console with a clean, warm aesthetic inspired by classic wooden electronics.

This project turns a damaged smartphone into a compact retro gaming station that connects to a TV via HDMI using a USB-C hub. With emulators installed, the device becomes a dedicated console capable of running classic games while maintaining the flexibility of being a normal phone when needed.

The enclosure is designed around a wood-style exterior that gives it a timeless, vintage character. All surrounding panels are removable and attached using magnets. This serves two important purposes. First, the phone can be easily removed at any time and used independently as a regular device. Second, the magnetic covers allow quick access for cleaning, maintenance, or internal adjustments without tools or complicated disassembly.

The modular structure keeps the exterior clean and minimal while hiding the functional interior. The magnetic system ensures a secure closure but remains practical and user-friendly. The design focuses on simplicity, accessibility, and reuse.

Beyond gaming, this project represents a philosophy: repurposing old technology instead of discarding it. It demonstrates how damaged or outdated devices can be transformed into something both functional and visually appealing. It is a small step toward creative recycling and sustainable making.

An additional part of the concept was inspired by cartridge-based consoles. The idea was to load games onto SD cards and insert them into the accessible SD slot on the top of the enclosure, creating a physical interaction similar to a Nintendo Switch-style experience. This adds a tactile, nostalgic element to the system, where changing the game feels intentional and tangible rather than purely digital.

Remixing and improving the design is encouraged under the same licensing terms, so the community can continue refining and evolving the concept.

The enclosure and overall construction were designed specifically around the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 dimensions. The internal tolerances, mounting points, and magnetic panel alignment are based on that device.

You are free to download the design and adapt it to fit your own phone model or modify it according to your needs. The concept can be easily adjusted for different smartphone sizes, alternative internal layouts, or custom hardware configurations. Feel free to remix, resize, or improve the structure to match your setup.

For the Ethernet cable, the USB-C internet adapter, certain Type-C cables, and a few additional cables used in the build, I am not able to provide purchase links because I already had these components available. The same applies to the cooling fan, which was also part of my existing equipment.

Since these items were previously owned, I do not have direct product links to share. However, equivalent components can easily be found online depending on your preferred brand and setup requirements.

For anyone interested in expanding this idea, I would genuinely love to see remixes and alternative versions of this console. The concept is open to evolution. You are welcome to improve it, refine it, or push it further while keeping the core retro wooden style that defines its identity.

The design can be adapted for different phone models, modified for new internal layouts, or upgraded with features I may not have considered. Whether it is better cooling, a different magnetic mechanism, improved ergonomics, or a completely new structural approach that still respects the original aesthetic, all creative directions are welcome.
