Introducing the Cyberuler: A Self-Playing Ruler
What happens when you combine embedded engineering with a common desk item? You get the Cyberuler.
Driven by a microcontroller, stepper motors, and fast-response servos, this device automatically slides and plucks a steel ruler to hit accurate musical pitches. To solve the intonation issue, I used Fourier transforms to analyze the frequency response of the ruler at different lengths, generating a highly precise calibration curve. With built-in MIDI support, it functions just like a hardware synthesizer.
The Cyberuler marks the debut of my ultimate hardware goal: a fully automated "Stationery Band." Let me know what you think in the comments!
