Description

Part of the Axis Gear Works — Kinetic Garden Collection

Two takes on the same kinetic idea, packed into one 3MF with ten plate variants to fit any printer and any space. The Single Helix is a clean open spiral — fewer blades, maximum airflow, fast spin in light wind. The Double Helix layers two interleaved spirals around the same axis (independently configurable inner and outer blade counts) for a denser, more intricate visual that catches light beautifully and rotates with weight. Both are pure sculptural geometry — no tea light, no electronics — designed as the standalone art piece in the AGW Kinetic Garden System and built to chain with the Lantern Helix above and the stained-glass Suncatchers below.

⚠️ Hardware note: Designed to suspend from a barrel swivel + monofilament line. Hardware not included.

Features

  • 🌀 10 plate variants in one 3MF — six Single Helix and four Double Helix sizes covering small desk pieces to large porch statements
  • 🎨 Slicer color control — recolor individual helical surfaces in Bambu Studio for striped, two-tone, or gradient looks
  • 🪶 Spins on minimal wind — solid helical airfoil generates strong torque from gentle breeze
  • 🔗 Stacks with the AGW system — chain via swivels with the Lantern Helix above and Suncatcher weights below
  • 🖨️ Print-in-place — no assembly hardware between printed parts
  • 📐 Variety in your library — same files print cleanly in solid colors, silk gradient PLA, metallic mattes, and translucents

The 10 Plates

Plate names encode blade count and footprint, so you can pick exactly what fits your printer and your space at a glance. For Doubles, the name lists inner and outer blade counts independently.

Single Helix — 6 plates

PlateBladesFootprint (mm)Best Fit
4Blade150x1204150 × 120Small — quick print, A1 Mini friendly
4Blade120x1604120 × 160Small/tall — vertical accent
5Blade200x1805200 × 180Medium — balanced spin and detail
6Blade100x2406100 × 240Tall narrow — vertical drama
6Blade250x1506250 × 150Wide statement piece
6Blade240x1806240 × 180Large — main porch hanger

Double Helix — 4 plates

PlateInner / Outer BladesFootprint (mm)Best Fit
Double — 4Inner3OuterBlades120x1204 / 3120 × 120Compact dense detail
Double — 5Inner4OuterBlades140x1205 / 4140 × 120Small/medium, balanced layering
Double — 7Inner5OuterBlades160x1607 / 5160 × 160Medium — best general-purpose double
Double — 6Inner4OuterBlades200x1406 / 4200 × 140Large — maximum visual impact

💡 Double Helix tip: the inner spiral and outer spiral each spin together but the differing blade counts create a visual interference pattern when the wind catches them — almost like a moiré effect in motion. Print inner and outer in contrasting AMS colors to highlight it.

🎯 Manual painted supports — already done for you. Each plate has Tree Slim supports manually painted only where the helical geometry actually needs them. Don't switch to "Auto" support generation — fully automatic supports will over-support the spirals, making the print heavier, slower, and harder to clean up.

The bundled profile also sets support top Z distance to 0.27mm (Quality → Support) for clean release between supports and the spiral surfaces above. The supports are dialed in; just slice and print.

💡 Outdoor durability: for full-sun outdoor use, PETG or ASA outperforms PLA significantly. For covered porch or window, PLA holds up well and the matte finish is hard to beat.

Color Guide

Pick any AMS color — design supports any palette. Combinations that look great:

  • Solid single-color — lets the geometry breathe; the helical shadow does the visual work
  • Two-tone double helix — outer spiral one color, inner spiral a contrasting color (see green-and-copper combo in photos)
  • Silk gradient PLA — Bambu's rainbow silk filament gives the multi-color spinner look from a single material
  • Metallic Matte — Bambu Matte Bronze, Royal Blue, Purple all carry the helical shadow lines beautifully

Tips & Tricks

  • Use a swivel. Without one, line twist accumulates and stops the spinner within a day. A small barrel swivel between hanging point and spinner solves it permanently.
  • Stack the system. Hang a Lantern Helix above and a Suncatcher weight below, separated by swivels. Each layer rotates independently — visual complexity, stable axis, more wind capture.
  • Tail-fin stability for windy spots. A flat printed weight at the bottom keeps the chain oriented into the wind so it spins cleanly instead of tumbling. The Stained-Glass Suncatchers double as tail weights.
  • Print orientation as plated — point up, hub down. Tree Slim supports clear easily from inside the spirals.
  • Color paint the slicer way: in Bambu Studio, paint individual spiral surfaces different colors after slicing. AMS swaps add print time but the result is striking — see the green-inner / copper-outer combo in the photos.

Part of the AGW Kinetic Garden Collection

The Helix Wind Spinner is one piece of the modular AGW kinetic garden system. Each piece chains via swivels — mix Lanterns, Helix Spinners, and stained-glass Suncatcher weights to build your own custom display.

Save the collection to get notified when new models are added — new dog breeds, birds, insects, and helix variants drop regularly.
