Description
This is a printable kit to swap your ARRIS SURFboard S33 modem into a 1U 10" rack mount enclosure with a cooling fan. These modems get extremely hot when passively cooled, but even a small amount of active airflow can keep them cool to the touch under load. You will need the following parts:
* Your S33 modem (disassemble but keep the coax threaded nut, clear light guide, and all screws)
* A suitable 40x20mm fan. I highly recommend the Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX. You will have to solder the positive and negative leads, as seen in the pictures.
Slide the motherboard in place, finger tighten/snug the hex nut on the coax port, screw down the single set screw, snap in the light guide (from the top, might need to angle back slightly - will click) press in your fan and connect the wiring, screw on the rack ear (optional, bring your own screws), and then attach the lid. You can use any of the three small screws from the original casing, but the two sharp ones are easier.
Don't forget to peel off your old label and slap it somewhere on the case - might be helpful to have your serial and mac addresses in the future.
Note: this model 100% could use some refinement, but it's functional as-is. I'd love to see the front panel somehow reworked to push the light out a little more, and it wouldn't be difficult to remix another rack ear option for a 19" rack.
