Description

I'm making my take on a Lox from the Plains biome of the game Valheim. These large creatures are like a combination of a lizard and an ox, thus giving it the name "Lox." While they will become frightened and aggressive in the wild if approached, they can be tamed. The lox is an excellent companion with plenty of health, stamina, and defense. You can also craft a saddle, making the lox an invaluable mount. It will even ignore the player's carry weight, allowing you to ride around freely while encumbered.

I've had the lox on the my list of creatures to sculpt for a while, and with it being one of the more beloved creatures in the game, I wanted to make sure that I did it justice. While strong and fearsome, the lox still seems like a large puppy dog, to me. I had the idea to sculpt him standing in a field of cloudberries with a big smile. For the fur, I tried a couple different techniques, but I was most satisfied with using the Voxel Brush to paint it on. Once I got the fur roughed in on top of the form, I converted it to a polymesh, and used my normal brushes in Poly Mode to model in the textures.

For the more reptilian aspects of the lox, I referenced caiman lizards, as they seem to have somewhat similar facial structures. The prominent brow ridge, eye and mouth placement really stood out to me when comparing images side-by-side. The individual scales on the face and head where modeled with the caiman lizard reference, as well as the artwork from the 2025 Valheim Calendar. The official art for the game is so amazing, and continues to inspire me.

I did take a little extra time to model in the saddle, which I feel adds so much to the final piece. To take it a step further, I wanted to model the cloudberries, as well. These berries are actually real life fruit. Apparently, they are rare Arctic berries that prefer acidic, boggy environments, and taste like a combination of raspberry, strawberry, and vanilla. The in-game model is very similar to the real plant. I just added the sepals that open to display the fruit when it's fully ripened.
