Description

This is a reinforced, cartridge puller designed for Moen 1222 shower cartridges.

Required Hardware 

To complete this tool, you will need the following stainless steel hardware:

  • 1x #10-24 Threaded Rod: If you prefer a more compact tool, a standard hacksaw can be used to cut the rod to your preferred length. Just be sure to file the ends or run a nut over the cut to keep the threads clean.

  • 1x 1/4" SAE Stainless Steel Washer: https://geni.us/daBmlWW
  • 1x #10-24 Nut/Wing Nut: You can use a standard Hex Nut (best for using a wrench) or a Wing Nut if you prefer a tool-free, hand-tightened setup.

Recommended Print Settings

For maximum torque resistance, do not use "Standard" profiles. Use these structural settings:

  • Material: PETG or PETG-CF (Highly recommended for rigidity).
  • Wall Loops: 8 (Crucial for cylinder strength).
  • Infill: 50% Gyroid.
  • Top/Bottom Shells: 5 Layers.
  • Supports: None required. 

Assembly & Use

  1. Insert the #10-24 rod through the top of the puller.
  2. Place the washer and nut on the exterior side of the tool.
  3. Align the bottom viewports with the "ears" of the Moen cartridge.
  4. Tighten the nut to draw the cartridge into the chamber.

Note: If the cartridge is extremely seized, apply heat to the valve body before applying maximum torque to the 3D-printed tool.

Troubleshooting & Pro-Tips

Even with a heavy-duty design, removing a seized cartridge can be a challenge. Here are the most common issues and how to handle them:

  • The Nut is Hard to Turn: If you feel extreme resistance, do not force it. This usually means the cartridge is calcified (mineral buildup) or the rubber gaskets are fused to the valve. Use a hair dryer or a heat gun on the metal valve body for 2–3 minutes to expand the housing, then try again.
  • The Threaded Rod Bends: If your #10-24 rod Stainless Steel Threaded Rod starts to flex, stop immediately. Apply a penetrating lubricant (like PB Blaster) into the valve and let it sit for 15 minutes before another attempt.
  • The Tool "Climbs" or Tilts: Ensure the bottom viewports are perfectly centered over the cartridge "ears." If the tool sits crooked, it can put uneven pressure on the plastic, leading to a failure.
  • The Nut Marrs the Plastic: If the hex nut starts to sink into the top of the puller, you likely forgot the 1/4" SAE washer Stainless Steel Washer. The washer is critical for distributing the load across the reinforced top shell.
