Description
Between poop, purge lines, brims, supports, and failed prints, it's a huge bummer to see your favorite filaments turn into waste. If you look closely at your waste pile, however, you might notice some really unique shapes and colors. They look pretty cool, so why throw them out?
The Fantastic Fails mobile allows you to assemble some of your most interesting scraps in a bright, colorful display for your garden or porch. The mobile is especially enjoyable in a gentle breeze, as hollow pieces like tree supports make a gentle “clacking” noise as they collide with heavier pieces (such as poops, pieces of temp towers, or other broken parts).
Advice for building your mobile:
- You will need string that is <0.6mm thick. The holes on the mobile are 1mm in diameter, but you want plenty of clearance. Something like fishing line would be perfect. I used elastic string because that's what I had on hand.
- If you can't find any pieces that look interesting in their current state, try thinking outside of the box! I provided a couple examples of how I cut up some pieces to make them cleaner/more intentional. I would recommend having a pair of wire cutters or sharp pliers to help you make changes to your scraps!
- Hang up your mobile periodically while assembling to make sure it is balanced. Try to distribute heavier pieces evenly across the mobile.
- To keep the 3D printing theme, I did not add any additional pieces to the mobile – but you could always add other unwanted objects to your mobile, such as beads from old jewelry, key chain charms, etc. Used aluminum foil or cut up soda cans could also be added to keep birds away from your garden.
