Description
🐛 Modular Mealworm Breeding Box
This is a compact, stackable system designed for efficient mealworm breeding and clean frass collection.
🔧 Key Features
- Two-level system
- Top: breeding chamber
- Bottom: frass collection
- Integrated sieve (no extra parts)
- Optimized slot design
- Allows frass to fall through while keeping worms inside
- Snap-fit locking system
- Secure but easy to open
- No tools required
- Ventilated lid
- Controlled airflow
- Prevents excessive drying
- Optional thermometer / hygrometer slot
- Can be enabled or disabled via parameters
⚙️ Parametric Design
You can fully customize:
- Box size (width / depth / height)
- Sieve density
- Thermometer opening
🧪 Printing
Material: PETG
Layer height: 0.2 mm
Perimeters: 3
Infill: 15–20%
Supports: No
Brim: Optional
💡 Why this design?
Unlike simple worm boxes, this system:
- separates frass automatically
- reduces maintenance
- improves hygiene
- is fully modular and scalable
🚀 Tip
Print multiple trays and stack them for continuous production.
If you like the design, consider boosting it 🙌
- "No supports needed”
- “Fully parametric”
- “Easy cleaning”
- “Expandable system”
I added the option to create ventilation slots in the lid to the parameters. You can choose whether you want ventilation slots (1) or not (0) and the width and number of slots in the lid. You just have to enter the number of slots so that they do not interfere with the opening for the thermometer, which can also be parametrically turned off (0) or on (1).
Version V2 added with a box for adult worms and a box for eggs
Modular Mealworm Breeding System V2 – Stackable, Self-Sorting, Parametric
🧾 DESCRIPTION
This is an improved version (V2) of my modular mealworm breeding system, designed for efficient, clean, and scalable insect farming.
The system now includes two additional functional boxes:
🐛 Beetle box (with slotted bottom) – allows eggs to fall through
🥚 Egg collection box – separates eggs from adult beetles
This creates a natural self-sorting workflow, reducing manual handling and improving breeding efficiency.
⚙️ Key Features
Fully modular & stackable system
Self-cleaning process (frass drops down automatically)
Separated lifecycle stages (larvae → beetles → eggs)
Parametric design:
ventilation slots (on/off)
slot size & spacing
box dimensions
number of slots
Optimized for 3D printing (no supports required)
🧩 System Structure
From top to bottom:
Beetle Box
Slotted bottom
Eggs fall through automatically
Egg Box
Collects eggs safely
Prevents beetle interference
🔄 Compatibility with V1
⚠️ Important:
Due to the new locking stack system, compatibility with V1 requires:
👉 Option A:
Print a new bottom (frass) box
👉 Option B:
Print only the locking base plate
Glue it onto your existing V1 bottom box
🧠 Why this design?
This system minimizes:
manual sorting
contamination between stages
maintenance time
At the same time, it maximizes:
breeding efficiency
cleanliness
scalability
🖨️ Printing Recommendations
Material: PLA / PETG
Layer height: 0.2 mm
No supports required
Ensure good bed adhesion for large parts
🚀 Parametric Customization
You can easily adjust:
Box width / depth / height
Ventilation (ON/OFF)
Slot width & spacing
Number of slots
Perfect for adapting to:
different insect species
climate conditions
container sizes
